The winter solstice came and went without much recognition on my part. I think it crossed my mind last night at some point, but it was just a passing thought.
Today I thought about it for a while. The shortest day of the year has passed. It's interesting that yesterday I finally went into cleanup mode on my very very messy messy room. Even as I was cleaning I thought, "hmmm I guess there's a shift in the energy or something." Or something is right. In the afternoon, Joette and I went out into the snow and visited 3 different coffee shops around our neighborhood. It was, dare I say it, fun. We talked about interesting things, brainstormed some ideas for both of us, and I also had a little time to myself to sketch a new pattern. By the time we got back to the apartment, my boots were soaked, and my toes tingled as they warmed up again.
Then I worked on some art and reminisced about the good old days by looking through photos. I wasn't aware of it at the time, but in a way it ended up being a very meaningful way to spend a winter solstice day, afternoon, and evening.
I didn't get my artwork photoed and uploaded today. Instead I gave myself a tummy ache from eating some pesto tortellini that I made for lunch. I didn't eat too much, but it didn't agree with me, so I snuggled in bed and read a book that caught my eye when I was cleaning up my room. It's another "heavy" book, with heavy, mind blowing ideas that I can't seem to get enough of lately. I've already cried a little bit 3 times while reading it, and I think I'm on chapter 5 or so.
Oh, so reports are that we got about a foot or foot and a half of snow all in all. I'd say it's more than a foot. It's nuts out there still and almost everything is closed except for grocery stores, some coffee shops, and bars, though a lot of restaurants gave up and closed shop. Most people walk down the middle of the road because the snow is packed down and it's easier than navigating the pocked and slippery soft snow on the sidewalks.
I left the apartment once today and walked the block or so to Fred Meyer and bought some cocoa powder and organic milk. With this kind of snow, swiss miss just doesn't cut it.
The final thought I'll leave you with is that I arrived in Portland exactly 5 months ago today.
