Thank you for this insight! Italy is already in that lockdown place, here in Germany people seem to still believe they are not THAT much in danger. In Italy, there is a lot of social media attention about China sending masks and disinfectants and breathing apparatus to the Italian people and how all other European countries are evil, only China cares for Italy. The weird thing about this crisis is that most people aren't in that much danger. If you're healthy and young, or even middle aged, the odds are low that anything bad will happen. So i can understand that some people are resistant to taking draconian measures.
I'm interested to see what the CPC will do as it spreads beyond Italy. The depressing thing is that they are already using the crisis to drive propaganda. As i mentioned on the post, Xi has already claimed victory, and the next phase has been to have rich party members like Jack Ma give "charity" to evidence just how heroic and selfless the party is. Of course other governments do the same thing, but with the CPC it's more worrying because they are using their growing global influence to export tools for dictatorship like self-censorship and "internet sovereignty".
These authoritarian types just slide their way out of taking any responsibility whatsoever, it's depressing. I feel like the same thing is going to happen in the west too.
Thanks for the heads up. We're just now getting into the "lockdown" faze, and our city is one of the first to really start doing it in the U.S. I just hope things settle down before I run out of toilet paper haha.
I think even though there have been a lot of deaths in Seattle due to the nursing home cluster, you may come out of this less badly-hit than other parts of America because the lockdown started early. Well, earlier. We'll see how it goes.
The moment Trump put his lackey Pence in charge i was like "that's a veteran dictator move". Now, if this all goes to shit, he can let Pence's head roll. But if somehow he pulls off a "victory", he'll swoop in to take all the credit. It's very upsetting to see it play out so blatantly

I've been hearing that China's COVID-19 cases are waning, and you're beginning to "open up" - at least somewhat. So - that give me hope that things WILL run their course.
Clearly the USA is MORE than fucking up their handling of this. (no test kits) But - what would you expect with tRump at the helm? And, putting "tRump Puppet, Pence in charge of the "task force" (oh - he doesn't believe in science -- odd choice, I might say....) is downright abysmal. And, Xi doesn't have the corner on the market for lying and fake news.
But, you're right that there is no way that this country would tolerate the kind of lockdown you've had, even if it technically might be the wisest course - at least for virus control.
I worry, though am not obsessing. I'm 70 so I'm within one of the groups who are most at risk. At least I'm healthy so I'm not in both groups.
Things will definitely run their course. Even if the worst case scenario happens, humanity as a whole will prevail. That's not much comfort if you are in a high risk group, or if the response causes you to lose your job or savings, though
