I've been thinking about childhood a bit in the past while as I'm slowly building sort of a scrap book of my life history lately... with some pictures and little memories, etc.
Anyway... here's a relatively big event that happened. I almost killed a neighbor kid.
It was an accident, of course, and he had to go into the hospital... it turned out OK but if things had been a bit different, who knows.
We had a very steep hill on the other side of the railroad tracks way in back of my house growing up. When we were kids, we'd sometimes play down by the tracks, altho I don't think our parents would've approved. Always listening and watching for trains in case we had to scamper out of the way. But this story doesn't really involve trains.
The steep hill was being climbed up by some older kids. I guess I was about 6 or 7 and the kid who got hurt was probably only about 3. So the older kids were up the hill and some rocks were being rolled down the path... which I thought was pretty cool. When they stopped with the rocks, I started climbing up the steep path... and I wanted to roll some rocks down. So I rolled a few (not exactly small) rocks down... but I did not know that our little neighbor was starting to climb up.
OK, so who lets a 3 year old kid play on a steep hill by a railroad track? Anyway, he was there and his brother who was my age was also there...
So a big rock hit him in the head as it was rolled down by me. We all took him back home and he ended up in hospital. I remember having to tell the whole story to an insurance person or maybe a lawyer, not sure. It ended up OK, but it was a serious situation at the time.... especially as the kid had other medical issues already.
One other memory, before that, is that I was being silly and imitating this little neighbor kid by doing a funny facial expression. It was like imitating a disabled person, which I guess I didn't grasp at the time, as the kid had a medical condition that affected his face. My mother was so angry. I was spanked, which was not a normal thing for me... I was spanked very hard by my mother because she was so upset about what I had done. She even spanked me, having pulled my pants down, and did it at the door so the neighbors could see. Very unusual, but I learned my lesson.
