Part 4

Part 1               Part 2              Part 3A       Part 3B

From one room of hospital, there was actually someone who was watching the two reunited lovers sadly. It was none other than Hikaru’s friend, Keito. He came to the hospital to visit his little princess, Chihara. But when he averted his gaze to the window and looked out, he saw Hikaru and a man were hugging each other. Not long after that he slightly widened his eyes as they kissed each other in very long minutes. And that lovers’ scene stabbed his heart, making it broke into pieces.

“So… is it him… Hikaru-chan… Yuuto?”  Keito mumbled inwardly. He recalled something Nakajima ever said to him recently. He also never imagined it was the last time he could play around with that kindergarten teacher.

“Yo! Oka-san!”

Keito turned around and whacked the person’s head. There was only one man in this world who called him ‘Oka-san’. “Don’t call me ‘Oka-san’!” He warned. “How many times I have to tell you that thing, Yuuto!? I’m not your mother!” He scoffed off.

“Eh??? It’s a cute nickname, darou?” The taller man argued his statement. “Besides, your surname is Okamoto after all. And it’s quite long to be called. ‘Oka-san’ is really suit to you.” Nakajima playfully retorted, grinning.

Keito sighed and shook his head. Nakajima was always like that, playful.

“So…what’re you doing here?” Nakajima casually asked.

“I want to buy some flowers.” Keito replied, beaming. His eyes wondered to every corner to check which flowers he had to buy.

Nakajima grinned. He knew Keito would surely give the flowers to someone. There was no way for his friend to save flowers. “For whom??? Yaotome-san?” He teased his friend. The only one Keito had been concerned these years was none other than his student’s mother.

Keito sheepishly nodded, slightly blushing. “I heard she’s sick so…” There was nothing wrong to show his care to other people, mainly if it was the one dear to you.

“You only want to see her or…” Nakajima teased again, knowing what Keito’s real intention as his friend intently looked at the red roses.

Keito slightly pouted. “Alright, I’ll be honest. I want to confess to her.” And there was slight pink blush painted on his cheeks.

Nakajima gave a faint smile. “I think you’ll get rejected, Keito.” Deep inside his heart, he felt sorry for Keito. He would not ever get Hikaru’s heart, just like his case with a woman he loved.

Keito frowned. He did not understand why Nakajima should say something discouraging in time like that. He was his best friend, wasn’t he?  “How can you know it?” He scoffed off.

“Because I know someone who loves her more than anything and apparently Yaotome-san also likes him.” Nakajima bluntly answered.

Keito narrowed his eyes. “It’s not you, is it?” He wearily asked because he knew he was not the only one who treated Hikaru in a very kind way since she came to this town. Many people showed their care to her including Nakajima himself during her pregnancy, giving birth, and also raising Chihara.

Nakajima laughed at that silly question. “Of course not!” He denied in an instant. “Even though Yaotome-san is kind and nice… she’s not my type…how many times I’ve stated it, really…” He reminded. “Besides… I already love someone else.” He added.

“Ja… who is he?” Keito urged. He wanted to know his rival the most until he forgot to ask Nakajima whom the girl he loved that time.

“You’ll know later after both of them admit it. I think it won’t be long. They’re just too shy to admit.” Nakajima refused to tell Keito whom the lucky guy and walking away. He was really sure with what he just said. Keito would know his rival in a short time since the only gap between Hikaru and the man he was talking about were going to disappear.  “Ja ne, Oka-san!” He playfully said and ran away.

Keito simply pouted by the nickname Nakajima specially gave to him. But he was lazy to catch him up. On the same day… Keito cancelled his intention to confess to Hikaru. He decided to watch the situation and found his rival first.

Keito then averted his gaze away from Hikaru and her lover, trying his best not to shed a tear. He really got a surprise to know his rival, and even the result this fast, just like what Nakajima had stated earlier. From that short accidentally peeping, Keito knew for sure, he never could step in between them. He could say that because Hikaru would not let someone touched her so easily. Therefore, if there was a man touched her… particularly kissed her… he must be someone special for her. It obviously hurt him to know Hikaru already found someone to stand by her that was not him. But what else could he do? Particularly, if it was Hikaru’s happiness.

As he watched at Chihara who was happily chatting with Daiki and Ha-chan, his mind wondered along to the time long ago when he met Hikaru for the first time.

On that beautiful day where sun brightly shone up the day, he went out to accompany his cousin, Takaki, walked around the town. In the middle of their trip, Keito saw there was a girl whom nearly fell down since someone bumped into her. He so naturally made his way to the girl and managed to catch her in time before she landed on the land. Keito’s heart stopped beating for second when he saw the face of the girl he helped. He could not blink his eyes and got stunned looking at her. In his eyes, the girl was like an angel, so pure. Besides, the girl was wearing a bright white dress which made her looked like a creature from Heaven. He got back to the real world when he felt someone tapped his back and told him to release his hands from the girl already since she had asked him for three times. Keito in sudden yet gently released his hands and blushed in embarrassment. He did not know how much seconds passed since he wrapped his arms around her slender figure.

The way the girl smiled and thanked him resulted him to wildly drown on his mind until Takaki should tapped his back again to get him back to the world. And just after that, he heard a call and the girl turned to the voice. He apparently knew the girl’s name without having to ask her firstly. To surprise him, he recognized who called the girl. He was his friend, Nakajima and then he just realized that the girl was actually pregnant. At first, he thought Nakajima would introduce her as his wife but he startled when Nakajima said she was only his friend by the name Yaotome Hikaru. At that time, Keito could not describe why he became so happy when he knew Nakajima and Hikaru were only friends but then he realized it. It simply was falling in love at the first sight.

When he told about it to Takaki, the older boy simply asked him back whether he was sure or not and also the willingness of him to accept Hikaru with all her condition. Keito could not answer right away. He almost forgot that Hikaru was pregnant. Takaki then advised him to reconsider his feelings towards Hikaru. He told him that Keito would only hurt her if he could not fully accept her condition. Her condition that her lover just died and she would have a baby from other man soon. Keito took Takaki’s advice to make sure his feelings for Hikaru and whether he could treat her baby like his own or not before he confessed his feelings.

And day after day, Keito realized that he really loved Hikaru. When Nakajima told him that Hikaru needed to have bed rest for few days on the hospital, Keito got really worried about her and amazingly about her baby as well. He in rush headed to the hospital to visit Hikaru there. When he came into her ward, he looked Hikaru was simply laying down weakly. He then came to visit her every day at the hospital to simply meet her and convince himself that Hikaru and her baby were alright. During his visits, Keito noticed how much Hikaru loved her baby and it touched his heart. He started to love her baby since then. And then the day when Chihara was born, he went to the hospital and see Hikaru along with Chihara. Seeing the love Hikaru gave to Chihara made Keito fell deeper and deeper at Hikaru. He began thinking that Hikaru looked more beautiful when she was with her baby. At that time, Hikaru was like a sun, shining attractively and giving her light to every human.

One week after Chihara was born; Keito went to Takaki’s hometown to help him with his restaurant. And there, he met a woman whose face similar to Hikaru. When he told her that he knew someone who resembled her, the lady asked him to tell her more detail. Then he found out that the lady was none other than Hikaru’s mother. It was obvious when he was asked to bring her along with her husband to Hikaru’s place. He just said ‘yes’ and took them to their daughter. Keito did not know what they talked about since Hikaru asked him to leave her with her parents alone. And the next day, Keito saw the happiness upon her face and Hikaru simply thanked him because he had brought her parents to her. Keito felt so happy to know he could make Hikaru felt happiness after awhile.

He, however, had not confessed his feelings towards her. It was simply because Hikaru ever said that she was not ready enough to have a love relationship when he playfully asked her about finding a new love. Keito respected her decision. He understood that Hikaru probably had not got over Chihara’s late father yet. She needed time and Keito would gladly give her as long as it could make her happy. And then, without being asked, Keito gave his care to Chihara just like her father. But, he lately realized that he should make his move to make Hikaru notice his love for her was beyond a friend.

Unfortunately for him, today he had lost his chance to tell Hikaru about his feelings. Hikaru had determined her choice already just like what Nakajima ever said to him. She already found the man she trusted. And sooner or later, he was sure Hikaru would gladly to introduce the man who he saw at Nakajima’s funeral as her choice. And he had to prepare his heart since now so that when Hikaru officially told him, he would not get so surprised. He could say congratulation for her in light heart. He never imagined he would see Hikaru kissed other man and vice versa. To surprise him, Hikaru looked like not mind being hugged and kissed by him. She seemed to enjoy their time instead. Despite his broken heart after losing Nakajima and Hikaru at once, Keito realized that Hikaru was the only one who could decide whom the best for her. Therefore, he should respect her decision, face it and feel happy for her.

“Kouta…” Hikaru softly called from Yabu’s shoulder.

“Hmm…” Yabu softly hummed, playing their intertwined fingers.

“You really came to my graduation?” Hikaru asked.

Yabu smiled. “Of course I did! I’ve promised to come and give you a Colourful Tsubaki bouquet, haven’t I?” He asked back.

“You remembered?” Hikaru slightly widened her eyes hearing that.

Yabu nodded. “I also promised to tell you why the flowers are special.” He added.

“Kou…” Hikaru nearly could not believe that Yabu actually kept and remembered his promise.

Unfortunately, Yabu’s smile disappeared as he spoke out the next sentence. “But I already threw it into the river when I couldn’t find you at the graduation or at your home.” He was so angry that time since he could not find Hikaru. “Your neighbour also said that they never saw you for almost a month. And your parents also weren’t at home.” Yabu told what happened with the promised Colourful Tsubaki for Hikaru. The thing he could thing back then was simply Hikaru had left him. “You really did not want to meet me that day?” Although he already knew the answer, he still wanted to hear it from Hikaru.

Hikaru looked down. “I won’t deny I wanted not to meet you ever again.” She softly replied in sadness and regret.

It really hurt, more than Yabu imagined when he heard it from Hikaru. Hearing the woman she loved wished not to meet him ever again.

“But…” Out of sudden, Hikaru spoke.

Yabu averted his gaze back to Hikaru. “But?” A tiny seed of hope grew in his heart. He hoped Hikaru actually wanted to come and that was enough to heal his wound.

“But… I don’t know why I couldn’t stop my thoughts at you that day… a whole of that day…” Hikaru replied. Up till now she always wondered why she could not stop thinking about Yabu on her scheduled graduation day. Although she already knew that Yabu would never come.

Yabu felt a tiny bit of gladness. “It means you actually want to see me as well, Hika…” He answered although he knew he was not being asked. “You wished I’d come.”

Hikaru lifted her head up to look at Yabu. “Is it?” She doubted.

Yabu playfully pinched Hikaru’s cheek, making her pouted. “Of course it is.” He confidently stated. “Deep inside your heart… you wanted to come and meet me there.”

Hikaru gently held Yabu’s hand, thinking what Yabu said. Perhaps… it was right… it was true… she also wanted to see him on her graduation day… but… although she wanted to go… she never could…

“Nee… Hika…”

“Hm?”

“Why did you not want to come?” Yabu asked. He bitterly stared back at Hikaru’s sorrowful eyes. “Were you afraid I’d not come?” He wondered the thing he already knew the answer. There was no need to confirm it again to Hikaru.

Hikaru nodded, sorrowfully staring back at Yabu. “And even though you came, I was afraid it would only be the time you said goodbye.” She mumbled. Without realizing, her voice became cracking again. “I-I-I was so scared… Kou… really…” She gulped. Imagining Yabu said farewell to her was so hard enough until she could not take in air. How about if it really turned out to be reality? She might hang up herself and prefer to leave this world along with their baby. “… to hear you say goodbye.”

Yabu swiftly engulfed his arms around Hikaru. “I’ll never say goodbye to you… Hachibee…” He spoke soothingly in an instant to calm her. Saying ‘goodbye’ to Hikaru was something he never could do. Even during the times he got angry to Hikaru for breaking their promise, for leaving him without any explanation, he found no courage to forget Hikaru moreover to say goodbye. Even he hated her during those years, admittedly he never passed a day without thinking about her. Even by the fact he had Yamada, too, back then, but she never could replace Hikaru on his heart. “Never… I won’t afford it.”

“But…”

“Hikaru… I love you… always…” Yabu butted in.

Every time Yabu said ‘I love you’ to Hikaru, she always felt there was no pretend behind his words. And this time was not exception. She felt it, the truth, the tenderness, and the warmth. “I’m sorry…” She regretted the time she doubted his pure love for her.

Yabu simply placed his hand on Hikaru’s hair, tapping it softly. “No… you’re just afraid.” He took a deep breath. He could tell it was not wise to blame Hikaru for avoiding meeting with him. She simply protected herself from harm, from destruction.

Hikaru tightened her grips on Yabu. “Kouta…” With her soft voice she began. “Actually... there’s another thing... preventing me to go...”

Yabu gently made a fair gap between them, giving Hikaru a questioning look as his eyebrows furrowed. “Another thing…?” He mumbled curiously.

Hikaru nodded sadly. “Actually… even if I wanted I still couldn’t come.”

“Nande?” Yabu wanted to know.

“On that day, I was on this hospital, laying down on the bed.” Hikaru softly answered.

Hikaru’s reply made Yabu got his eyes wider in worries. “On the hospital? What happened to you? Something happened on you and our baby?” He frantically asked as he squeezed her hands. He was frightened that Chihara was actually born prematurely. And the guilt would be greater because he was not there for escorting her. He was not by her side when she needed the greatest support from him. He did not hold her hand when she screamed in pain.
