Part 2
Part 1 Hearing nothing from Hikaru, Yabu concluded the last possibility was true. Someone had touched her forcefully. “Who? Who is he? Who dared to touch you?!!!” Yabu raised his voice and clenched his fist due to anger thinking someone else dared to touch his girl when he was not around. He knew his Hikaru was pretty enough to make some men fell in love. He did not mind it but if they dared to touch Hikaru, it would be a problem. He would make sure they got something as the payback. “Hikaru… who is he??? Tell me!!!” Yabu ordered and turned Hikaru’s face to see her.
By the time Yabu looked at Hikaru, his heart clenched seeing something clear came out from her eyes. She was trembling too. “Hika…” He mumbled softly and regretfully then simply stared at her in silence. To Yabu Kouta, the tears Hikaru shed really stabbed right on his heart so deeply. The clear shimmering water on her vision recalled the day when Hikaru came back to the kindergarten on the day she was grazed by Yamada. The day he made Hikaru, someone he loved so dearly, cried. The day she declared she hated him. And today… he looked like never learnt anything from the past. He made her cried again and again. In almost a month since he arrived at this town, since he met Hikaru one time again, he could not remember the time, even for only once, he made Hikaru happy. During the days after their reunion, he simply gave a hurt and pain for her life and Chihara’s as well. He was the main and only reason for Yamada to do violence to both of them.
The soft way Hikaru’s sobbing demolished Yabu’s knowledge of words. Her breaking heart voice caused Yabu not to find a perfect word to say, to comfort her. His brain could only tell him one thing. He had hurt her so much with the way and the words slipped from him just now. He had accused her for leaving him, for cheating on him and then being raped by someone in series. Fortunately for him, unlike his head which could not function perfectly in harmony with the situation, his body reacted differently. He stretched out his arms and gently drew the sobbing Hikaru closer to him and gave her a warm-steady place to lean on. He assumed Hikaru needed it for the most now. Although there was probably any other way to soothe her, he kept choosing to surround her by his arms. It was a sign he would protect her too. “Sorry…” He mumbled. As he gave Hikaru soft and gently caress on her hair, something you called as a guilty came into his mind. He felt so stupid to force her to tell him who the man was just now. It must be, without a doubt, something hurting for her. Remembering when a man who forcefully touched her while she kept struggling and begging him to stop. It was a nightmare for every woman, how could he forget that??? “Hachibee… I’m sorry… I made you remember that…. I’m truly sorry… You absolutely want to forget it, nee??? I’m sorry…” He desperately expressed his regret and tightened his hug, attempting to comfort and erase the pain because of that.
Hikaru, on the other hand, said nothing when Yabu caressed her hair while embracing her and apologizing. She could only cry on Yabu’s chest, clutching on his shirt. Since Yabu began questioning and cornering her about their past, the reason why he could not find her on her graduation day, and also the real father of her daughter, Hikaru could not stop all the images which she had been going through. All of the scenes were being played on her minds and sight, making her crying got louder as her tears came out uncontrollably.
Yabu got upset even more hearing Hikaru brought no end of her crying. He really did not know what the best he should do or say to make the tears stopped rolling down. He eventually let his voice spoke out as he started to part his lips. “I’m truly sorry… Hachibee… Just forget about that… I swear I won’t ask about it again…. I’m so sorry… Hachibee…” He continued showing his deep regret for bringing that awful scene to Hikaru’s mind until she cried… for failing to protect the one he loved the most in times of need… for failing to be next to her during her hard times of pregnancy and giving birth… and for everything…. Everything… “I’m truly sorry… Hachibee…” He said it again with shakier voice, hoping his words and feelings could reach her heart so she could discontinue crying. “Listen… Hikaru…” Yabu slowly whispered into Hikaru’s ear. “Whoever her father is… I’ll always love Hara-chan… because… I’ve already liked her since the first time I met her… and then day after day I knew her better… I found my love for her got bigger and bigger… especially when I knew she’s your daughter…” He frankly said. When the first time he met Chihara on the rainy day, Yabu felt there was something between him and the little girl. He impressed at her kindness to lend him an umbrella to protect him from the rain. When she smiled at him, he saw a glimpse of Hikaru on her face as well. Another strange thing he felt that day was he felt he had a strong bond to her that he could not describe. That bond feeling somewhat encouraged him to know about her better. “And for me…whoever your children are… they’re mine too.” Yabu continued on.
Every word Yabu said was registered well in Hikaru’s mind. Unfortunately, the words could do nothing to calm her and stop her tears. She kept crying and crying, wetting Yabu’s black shirt. But unlike before, the tears that was coming out from her eyes not because of sadness only, it was also the tears of a seed of happiness. She never expected Yabu would say something sweet like that related to Chihara. “Are… are you sure Yabu-kun? You-you… can think about my children as… as… yours?” Hikaru finally managed to say something although she stuttered. It was obviously hard to believe Yabu could consider her children like his own.
Yabu could not help smiling a little hearing Hikaru’s voice, the soft and gentle sound he was eager to hear, instead of the heartbreaking sobs. “Without any doubt, Hikaru.” He began confidently. “I believe I’ll always find a way to love your children because you’re trusted enough to educate them very well, Hikaru. We’ve got the real example already. Your first daughter, Hara-chan. She’s really nice and good girl, Hika… I want a daughter like her.” He frankly added, telling her what actually on his minds. Afterwards, Yabu took a deep breath. “You know what, Hikaru… I really wish I were her father.” He muttered in disappointment and sadness. He had high confidence that Chihara was truly his daughter since he transfused his blood to Chihara. But… it was like he just too proud about his self esteem of knowledge. He, now, dissatisfied since the last sentences Hikaru said indicated that he was not. He wanted to know about Chihara’s father so badly but he realized he could not force her now. Hikaru had been crying and distressing for these few days because of him. And he did not want to add her sadness by remembering her about her terrible and unpleasant memories long years ago. The most important thing he should do right now was making her smile appeared again upon her face and not to force her to reveal something that she wanted to forget or even not to be happened in entire of her life.
Hikaru in sudden brought an end of her crying in time as Yabu told his wish for being Chihara’s father. She heard a sadness tone in his voice since he concluded he was not Chihara’s father for real. She pulled away and looked at Yabu whom gave her a faint yet warm smile.
Yabu gently wiped the trail of her tears in the corner of her eyes. “I’m truly sorry… Hachibee….” He muttered as he stared her in the eyes. “I promise you I won’t ask about her father. In my eyes… Hara-chan is already my own daughter. Hence, please don’t cry again.”
Hikaru could only glue her vision into Yabu’s eyes. She looked closely into his dark orbs through hers. Yabu really had similar eyes to her daughter… really similar… almost same. Therefore, as Chihara grew older and older, she could never totally forget about him although she wanted and tried. The seriousness she could notice through Yabu’s eyes encouraged her to think that it might be already the time… the right time for her to reveal the truth to Yabu and later to Chihara as well. She gulped and took a deep breath before starting to say a word. “Yabu-kun…” She got going.
“Nani?” Yabu asked in a very tender tone.
“About the rape…” Hikaru looked down.
Yabu sighed. He quite startled Hikaru brought back the topic after he had said he not wanted her to talk about it. “You don’t have to tell me. I know it only hurts you, Hika. I don’t want to see you shed tears anymore.” He said, hoping Hikaru not to start to talk the thing which hurt her only.
Hikaru slowly shook her head side to side. “You’re wrong, Yabu-kun.”
“Wrong?” Yabu’s eyebrows met in the centre of his forehead by Hikaru’s objection. He wondered what actually wrong when he suggested her to not talk about the rape. Yabu knew Hikaru had same thought -talking about the rape just opened the wound on her heart again-. Hence, he did not want to talk about that thing… yet, now… why did Hikaru herself seem like want to discuss with him?
Hikaru nodded. “First, I’m sorry for making you to have such thought.” She said softly, making Yabu gave her more questioning look. “Actually… no one touched me.” She whispered almost barely audible. “Only… you.” She added in louder voice and this time she looked directly into Yabu’s eyes as if she wanted to show Yabu that she was not lying about the raping. The only man whom she let to touch her was him, only Yabu Kouta.
Yabu’s eyes got wider when Hikaru told him he had a wrong conception. “W-what??... For real… Hika???” He said in shaky voice and Hikaru simply nodded and squeezed his hands, convincing him. He breathed out in relief, feeling so happy no one harassed her. But then… he trapped in confusion awhile. First, Nakajima told him Hikaru had not married yet, second, Hikaru thought he was the one who left her alone, third, she denied if he was Chihara’s father when he asked, and the last when he had a thought she was raped, Hikaru for the second time denied it too. So… what’s actually happened to both of them??? He closed his eyes, thinking deeply everything. And the result was the confidence of him as Chihara’s real father came into his mind again. Although Hikaru had denied it earlier, but just now she had stated that he was the only one who had touched her. The only man who ever slept with her, hadn’t she? Thus, it was not strange when he thought he was Chihara’s father, was it? “Ja… Hika… Hara-chan is…” He braced himself to ask nervously.
Hikaru flashed a small smile.
Yabu’s eyes became shining by tears instantly, seeing the smile Hikaru gave him. He knew it was not a fake one, it indicated her joy. “Hara-chan… is… is… my daughter… she-she… is our daughter, isn’t she, Hika???” He curiously asked as squeezing Hikaru’s hands. He prayed Hikaru would say ‘Yes’ this time.
Much for his relief, Hikaru nodded her head. “Yes…” She finally gave up, “Hara-chan is your daughter. She’s our daughter.” She stated and felt her shoulders were not as heavy as usual for keeping it secret for long time.
Yabu took awhile to react as he tried to make himself believe he was not dreaming at all. Chihara was his daughter… his lovely daughter with the woman she truly loved. He, however, could not stop the curiosity that made Hikaru kept it as a secret for years. “Hikaru… Nande… nande… you had to hide this fact for a long time????” He was in sudden being desperate. He really never thought that he was actually a father of a child since a long time ago. He never imagined Hikaru could keep it in secret from him. “Nande… you did not tell me back then??? Nande… you separated me from our daughter???” He desperately showered Hikaru questions to lead him to the real reason. “You couldn’t trust me??”
Hikaru’s sight started to blur as tears welling up her eyes when she heard the confusion and sadness in Yabu’s voice as he asked her. To be honest, she never wanted to hide it from Yabu at the first place. She wished she had had courage and chance to tell him at that time. “I-I’m sorry…” She choked.
Yabu noticed Hikaru nearly cried again through her shaky voice. He abruptly took her in his arms again. “I’m sorry if I a bit harsh towards you just now… and your reason probably makes you remember your pain… but… but… I… I-I… just… need to know everything… Hika… I need an explanation for the long separated time of us… We suffered during those times, didn’t we???” He said as he tried to control his emotions. He indeed suffered since he could not find Hikaru on the promised day anywhere. The situation got worse since the rumour got stuck on his head that day and for a very long time. “You can understand, can’t you?” He softly asked and felt Hikaru nodded her head on his chest. “Thanks… Hachibee.” He said then added, “You know… you’re not alone now… I’m here… you can tell and share your pain now… Just like I did before…” He tightened his arms around Hikaru. “Please tell me now.”
Hikaru took some deep breaths before answering. “When I found out I was pregnant. I was really scared and confused. I never imagined I could get pregnant on that age, so young… and so did you. I hesitated to tell you but I knew I should tell you…. So I strengthened myself to meet and tell you. I didn’t call you I was going to come over that day because I was afraid of your objection for my visit. The last time you came, you asked me not to see you there. You did not want me to get tired because of the trip… That’s what you said, was it?” She started to speak in bitterness and sadness on her voice.
“Yes…” Yabu nodded, signaling Hikaru was right. He indeed asked Hikaru that and he still remembered. Yabu forbade her to visit him not because he was afraid to get caught up cheating or such. Just like what Hikaru stated, he did not want her to get tired. Hikaru’s body was weak and he could not let her got sick because doing a long trip when she was on her third year. He simply thought they just needed to be patient for awhile until her graduation. After that, whenever Hikaru wanted to see him, he and her mother would always gladly welcome her. Hikaru could always spend some times there instead of just one-day tiring trip.
“But… when I arrived at your university I did not find you at first.” Hikaru mumbled.
“You didn’t find me?”
“Uhm… I met someone else instead.” Hikaru replied.
“Yama-chan?” Yabu abruptly concluded when he heard Hikaru met someone else at his university. “Did she hurt you too back then????” Yabu frantically asked as he released his arms from Hikaru. He wished he would not hear about Yamada threatened Hikaru.
