☆ Outsider Education
The staff of Hogwarts have made arrangements to compensate for the Outsiders' lack of prior education. In some cases, Outsider students will be set back a year (potentially more, if aged 16-18 on admission), but much of the material missed will be covered in catch-up classes. These catch-up classes will be mandatory for Outsiders, but native students may also attend voluntarily.

First Year
Outsiders will be treated as any other Hogwarts first year. Catch-up classes may be required if they arrive late on in the year. First year catch-up classes will take place from the middle of February to the end of June, on Tuesday/Thursday afternoons.

Second/Third Year
Outsiders will proceed as a Hogwarts second year, but with mandatory catch-up classes on Monday/Wednesday/Friday afternoons. Although third years will be attending second year classes, they will reside in third year dormitories and are permitted to visit Hogsmeade.

Fourth/Fifth Year
Outsiders will proceed as a Hogwarts fourth year, but will only take core subjects. Catch-up classes will take place in the electives' time slots, and students are also required to attend Summer School at Hogsmeade Campground. Although fifth years will attend classes with fourth years, they will reside in the fifth year dormitories.

Sixth/Seventh Year
These students will attend the adult courses, but are otherwise treated as other sixth and seventh year students. They will reside in their year's dormitories, and are subject to the same rules as other students. Should they complete all modules of a given subject, and pass to an Exceeds Expectations standards or higher, they may take a NEWT in that subject. Those who move onto NEWTs will remain in the main student dormitories and are still required to wear the school uniform. However, if they would normally have graduated, they will gain the adult students' Hogsmeade privelages and curfew.

Adult Students
Adults will attend a course provided by the Ministry of Magic. The details of this course can be found here.

☆ School Rules
While studying at Hogwarts, all students are expected to follow the Code of Conduct. Students are required:

  • To be on time for lessons and all school activities
  • To return to their common rooms by curfew
  • To come to lessons with the appropriate equipment
  • To move around the corridors in a quiet and orderly manner
  • To keep all parts of the school tidy
  • To avoid language or behaviour which could be offensive to others
  • Not to use magic in the corridors
  • Not to bring anything which may be a nuisance or a danger (refer to list provided by school caretaker)
  • To be dressed in correct, clean, tidy uniform during school hours
  • Not to enter the Forbidden Forest or other areas which are Out of Bounds (refer to list provided by school caretaker)
  • To remain on Hogwarts premises at all times, except when given permission to leave
Pets
Students may bring to Hogwarts an owl OR a cat OR a toad. If a student wishes to bring another kind of pet, permisson must be granted by the student's Head of House. Food and housing for students' pets will be provided, but otherwise the pet will remain the student's responsibility.

Punishment and Reward
The most common reward used in Hogwarts is giving House Points to the student's House. The Hogwarts House with the greatest number of points at the end of the year will be granted the House Cup, and the Great Hall will be decorated in the House's colors.

For minor infractions of the school rules, or general misbehaviour in class, House Points will instead be deducted.

For more severe infractions, detention will be given. Detentions will usually feature the Professor giving the student an unpleasant task. This could be anything from writing lines, to cleaning bedpans in the Hospital Wing.

Professors may also remove student privileges, such as Hogsmeade visits and participation in Quidditch matches.

☆ Hogwarts Uniform
The Hogwarts uniform is to be worn throughout the school day, and on occasions where students are representing the school. Outside of school hours, students are free to wear their own clothing. Adult students are not required to wear a uniform, but are instead expected to wear their House's emblem badge.

All clothing worn on any given day will be laundered that night and returned before morning.

☆ Notices
There are various noticeboards throughout the school: one in each common room, and a large noticeboard by the entrance to the Great Hall. Typically, these are used for announcing dates and events, such as clubs and Hogsmeade weekends.

Students are not permitted to post notices on the main noticeboard without permission. However, students may use their common room's noticeboard freely. Examples of appropriate noticeboard use include selling old textbooks and equipment, offering homework help, or organising study and activity groups.
