Accio! Hogwarts Castle and Grounds

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is one of the finest institutes of magical learning in the world, established over 1000 years ago in Scotland to educate the magical youth of Britain. Set in a large, sprawling castle with extensive grounds, it has a rich history and many, many secrets.

The school is protected by numerous enchantments. Those without magic cannot even see the school - they only see crumbling ruins with a warning sign to keep them away. Witches and wizards cannot enter the school easily, and the school cannot be placed on a map.

As Outsiders first approach the castle, seated in carriages pulled by what looks like nothing (though those who have witnessed death will see the black, skeletal winged horses for what they are), they are sure to be awed by the sheer scale and magnificence of the school.

As they pass through the gates, however, a feeling of fear and dread would wash over them: Dementors are guarding the school. In these troubled times, with notorious mass-murderer Sirius Black still evading capture, these sinister guards of Azkaban have been posted at the Hogwarts entrances, seeming to absorb happiness from those who pass by. Thankfully, they are posted only at the gates, as the Headmaster has no intention of allowing them inside the castle.

Even the interior is impressive, and impossible to map by means other than magic: the layout changes frequently, even while students are in residence. the staircases move, doors and rooms change location, and it's not unknown for the castle to “grow” new rooms as they are required.

This page provides very brief summaries of some more significant locations within Hogwarts, as well as details of day-to-day student life. More detailed descriptions of the school and castle may be found on Wikia or the Lexicon. The Lost Wing and School Shop are exclusive to Accio!

☆ Hogwarts Castle
The Great Hall
The main gathering hall of Hogwarts. It is a large, impressive chamber where the ceiling is enchanted to reflect the sky outside. This is where students and faculty will usually come for each meal of the day, as well as feasts, special events, exams, and occasionally classes. There are four long tables arranged parallel (one for each house), while the staff table sits on a raised platform to the front of the room.

Hospital Wing
Whether caused by magical means or otherwise, any injury or illness is best brought here. The Hospital Wing, run by the school matron Madam Pomfrey, is well equipped to deal with the majority of problems the students and staff might face. Only in the most extreme cases will patients be referred to St. Mungo's Hospital: even during the events of the previous year, where students were found petrified, they were treated in Hogwarts' Hospital Wing.

Library
Hogwarts features an expansive library with tens of thousands of books on a wide variety of subjects. Any student is welcome to study here, though the librarian - Madam Pince - may not always agree. While most of the library can be accessed by all students, there is a restricted section where students are required to have a signed note from a teacher. The contents of books in this section tend towards the dangerous or controversial, and are usually only used by older students.

Owlery
The top of the West Tower features a large, circular room that serves as housing for owls. Both the students' owls and the school owls are housed here, so this is where any student who wishes to mail something would come.

Common Rooms and Dormitories
The common rooms and dormitories are effectively the students' homes while they are at Hogwarts. Previously, there was one common room for each House, but due to necessity there are now two. The main common room and dorm for each House is for those of student age, while the second (located in the Lost Wing) is for adult students. The common rooms are typically decorated in the House's colours, and are accessed in different ways - Gryffindor and Slytherin both require a password, Ravenclaw requires an answer to a riddle, while Hufflepuff requires tapping a barrel to a specific rhythm.

Room of Requirement
A hidden room on Hogwarts' seventh floor, found opposite a tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy. It only appears when someone is in great need of it, and when it does appear it is always fully equipped for the seeker's needs (with a few limitations, such as food). The best way to gain entry is by walking past it three times, thinking about what you require. However, this room is not common knowledge, or even an uncommon rumour. For that reason, most students will only encounter the Room of Requirement in the form of a convenient bathroom or cupboard right when they need it.

School Shop
A location exclusive to the game, the school shop is currently found on the ground floor, just off the Entrance Hall. It is open on Saturdays only, and sells second-hand books, uniforms and school supplies at a low cost. The school shop is largely for the benefit of the students reliant on the assistance fund.

The Lost Wing
A location exclusive to the game, the “Lost” Wing (so named because it has been missing for approximately two centuries) is where the dormitories and common rooms for the off-world adult students can be found.

☆ The Grounds
Hagrid's Hut
A wooden cabin on the edge of the Forbidden Forest, with a pumpkin patch nearby. This is the home of Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts' groundskeeper and Care of Magical Creatures professor.

Quidditch Pitch
This is where the House Quidditch teams go to practice, hold trials, and play Quidditch matches. The pitch is oval in shape, with three hoop goalposts at each end. Seating for spectators can be found between the stands surrounding the pitch. Each year will see six matches, where the Houses compete for the Quidditch Cup.

Forbidden Forest
A large, dark forest expands to the East of Hogwarts Castle. It is off-limits to students, except under supervision from a teacher. Various magical creatures live here, many of which are dangerous. Creatures found here include, but are not limited to, acromantulas, hippogriffs, unicorns, thestrals and centaurs.
Wiki

The Lake
A large body of water, south of Hogwarts Castle. The lake is approximately half a mile in diameter, and houses various creatures including merfolk, grindylows, and a giant squid.
