I'm looking into Master's degree programs at French universities and have come across some worrisome statements concerning the value of such a degree outside of France. My questions are under the cut.

At what point in your academic "career" do you really have to start paying careful attention to who you're working with along the way? Certainly it helps to be 'connected' with an all-star academic during undergrad, but it's by no means essential to your future success.
