More Snow Stories

The snow is melting fast, fast, fast! But, we did manage to go XC skiing both yesterday and today. Yesterday we went in the afternoon, down a path along a river. Very pretty, but the skiing was bruuuuutal. There were many people also using the area to walk in the snow, plus the snow was an odd consistency, so it was a lot of work. Very little glide, and we had to use our arms very aggressively to help things along and just to remain upright. Despite it all, we probably did 3 or 3.5 miles. This evening was nicer, under a full moon, in a nearby field. There was a little more glide, the snow wasn't so deep, and it was colder, so it was faster, more slippery. We only went half the distance, probably no more than 1.5 miles. Still fun though!!

This weekend overall was a little bit nutty. The heavy, wet snow brought down power lines and trees all over the region. (We lost one of the big cypress pine trees in our back yard. It is ripped out by the roots! Most others seemed to have cracked rather than been uprooted.) We lost power around 6am Sunday morning... gotta love the burglar alarm that makes sure you know it has no power by going off. :/ I waited all day, thinking the juice would come back on "soon", but, once the temps got down into the low 50ies in the house and night was predicted to bring temps down to the 20ies, I decided we had to move the birds. We packed them up and we all spent the night at SS's, watching the Olympics. (Nicky likes when we whistle the Olympic theme.) In the end, VERY glad I decided to move them, because it looks like my landlords spent the nite huddled in the living room around the fire. I bet it got REALLY cold. :(

Everyone is back home now and it is nice and toasty warm.
