Realism v. optimism.

I have what I think is a realistic outlook on the world. For example, it has been one of my great frustrations in grad school that no one takes me seriously regarding my problems with math. I tell people (professors, GSIs, friends) that I don't understand and I think I might fail the course, and they inevitably tell me that I'll be fine and I ( Read more... )

podcasts, school, i have no idea what i'm doing, me v. math

Here is my unasked for philosophy on life. This philosophy was obtained after years of being rational and realistic and it getting me nothing but frustrated. (I also suck at math. I understand your pain. People think cuz I'm smart at other stuff that I'll just pick up the math but NO.)

anyway. philosophy.

I AM MADE OF AWESOME. I EAT AND BREATH AWESOME. IF I FAIL I'M STILL FUCKING AWESOME AND FUCK YOU IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE.

cuz in life sometimes we fail. So you get up and keep going and laugh at landing on your ass cuz it probably was actually funny when you think about it. ;)

This is possibly the best philosophy on life. Ever.

Have you looked into being tested/evaluated for Dyscalculia? Changed. My. Life, no lie. At least there was a name for why my brain was like teflon when it came to any mathematical concept, no matter how hard I might try. It wasn't recognized as a disability by my school when I was in undergrad, so I didn't get accommodations, but that might have changed and knowing that it wasn't just because I was stupid helped. A lot.

Have you looked into a tutoring program? I know, it takes away from your valuable internet time. Being an adult sucks. Sorry sweetie.

I'm sure you don't mean to sound as condescending as you're coming off here.

No, dude, of course not! I feel this way about everything in life - why do we have to be grownups? Why can't we all just stay home and write fan-fic all day? I wish we could. I suppose if the whole world did, society would fall off into mania, but I at least wish people I think are awesome (re: you) should have less bad things in their life and more fun happy fandom time. I'm sorry it sounded condescending. I really meant, I'm sorry you're having a sucky time at school and I know being a grown-up literally can blow sometimes, and I wish you more fun times. I hate anything that takes away from my valuable internet time. Honestly. Boo responsibility! Yay fandom! And I hope people stop telling you to think positive because that really doesn't help you with math. I've been there. It was always my worst subject.

Sorry, I'm touchy about this. I have worked REALLY HARD and I'm still failing so it's frustrating when people suggest things that I have tried already. Like they think I'm just sitting around and playing on the internet all day, when I really am actually trying pretty hard.

Well, I have been screwing around more than I should, but I also put in several good hours of studying today! Tomorrow there will be more.

Have you read any of Martin Seligman's books? I think it's _Authentic Happiness_ where he talks about the whole 'over-confidence sometimes breeds success' issue. There's a quiz where you can assess your attitude toward both positive and negative events that happen in your life. IIRC, quote-unquote successful people believe that positive events happen to them specifically and for a reason; negative events happen to everyone generally and for no reason ( ... )

I haven't read those books! I will make a note of them.

Yay! I am always glad when I can share my to-be-read disease to others. ;)
