Kenna had been rigid in her brother's arms, the entire trip across the lake. Even though there had been plenty of room on either side of them, as the horses ambled along the causeway, her head was buried in his chest, holding her beloved teddy bear in a deathgrip.

Jeb had considered putting his horse to a run, making the trip shorter, but he didn't want to run the risk of the animal tripping and sending both he and his sister flying in any direction. His arms wrapped tightly around her, and he sang quietly, a song that their mother used to sing when she couldn't get to sleep.

Wyatt didn't like the helpless feeling he had, watching as his daughter was forced to suffer like this. Maybe he should have taken DG's father up on the original offer, to send a truck. But, he reasoned, Kenna knew the trucks only came with Longcoats, which would scare her just the same, if not more.

"Father," Jeb called to him, causing Wyatt to turn their way, just about three-quarters of the way across the span. Noticing the look on Jeb's face, Wyatt frowned and directed his horse closer. Jeb hadn't let go of Kenna, but had motioned with a nod that something was wrong.

Wyatt leaned sideways, putting a light hand on Kenna's back and shoulder. "Hey," he whispered, and smiled when he saw one of her eyes peeking at him from behind the bear's scraggly fur. It took another second for him to understand what had caught Jeb's attention.

Kenna's breathing was scratchy, almost like she was trying to take full breaths though a straw. The eye he could see wasn't as bright as usual, either. Wyatt glanced up at Jeb. "Does she have asthma?" he asked before reaching back for his canteen.

"Not that I know of," Jeb replied, shaking his head. He knew there had been times she'd be short of breath, after playing, but not enough that she'd ever complained. "Maybe it's just her nerves?" he added, nodding toward the lake.

Wyatt simply hummed, and knelt down to whisper to the seven-annual-old once again. "Hey. You need to sit up and drink this." Kenna shook her head just enough and turned her nose into Jeb's chest, squeezing her eyes shut.

"Ken," Jeb said, his tone just a little sharper than usual. "Close your eyes and sit up," he instructed.

Kenna's breathing sped up, sounding worse than before, and she shook her head against his shirt. "Ken, I mean it!" Jeb snapped, giving her a nudge.

"Just one sip, sweetheart. Then we'll go," Wyatt nodded, holding the canteen as close as he could to her. "We'll get these horses runnin' fast as they can go. Then we'll be in the city and you won't have to see the water at all."

"Promise?" they heard, muffled against Jeb's shirt. Jeb rolled his eyes and nodded.

"Yes, Ken," he sighed. Slowly, she turned back to face her father and reached for the canteen. Once she was sitting up, Wyatt could see that she was clearly having trouble getting air, though he wasn't sure if it was as Jeb had mentioned, and caused from her self-induced panic, or if it was something more.

Once they got to the city, he could have Raw give her a look.
