To anyone driving by, not much attention would be paid to the young man sitting on the curb. They might assume he was simply waiting for a friend, judging by the way his head would rise every few moments and look down the street. If that same person would happen to drive by a few days later, they might be surprised to find the same young man, sitting on the same curb, still waiting. After a week of seeing the same man on the same curb, most people might call the police, assuming the young man was staking the place for a robbery.

However, Simon Lowry wasn't most people.

Josh Harris was turning back from the thousandth look down Mission Street when he saw Simon come out of the bakery and start across the street. As the older man neared, Josh straightened and gave him a guilty nod. Simon stopped at the curb and dropped down next to Josh with a heavy sigh.

He winced slightly, giving the front of the bakery a look - it really was due for a touch-up, he noted. Remembering that Wyatt's young friend was sitting with him, Simon sighed and leaned back. "My wife would pull out some riff-raff about a watched pot," he said, then turned to Josh with a small smile.

Josh smiled and dropped his head, feeling rather foolish for sitting there, at his age, like a puppy waiting for his master to return home. "Come on, son," Simon continued, clapping Josh on the back. "You look like you could use a sandwich." It took Simon a bit longer to get back up than it did for him to get down, but he managed and held out a hand to help Josh up.

As Simon pulled him across the street, Josh gave another look down the road and frowned. "They aren't coming back, are they?"

"They'll be back," Simon assured him with a nod. Josh's eyes narrowed slightly and Simon smiled. "That girl never made a promise she didn't keep." He nodded again and went into the bakery, leaving Josh alone for a moment to give one more look down the street.
