Cabin Boys: Chapter I- The Arrival
(Here's the Prologue if you never read it before:
Prologue)
(Note: the dialogue in bold are Korean and Shoon and Yabu can't understand them. The dialogue in regular font is Japanese and they both communicate and understand it.)
(2nd Note: Shoon is 17 in this fic and Yabu is 16...notice the subject pronouns are in "teens" rather than "men"...I like young Shoon and Yabu better...xD)
The sounds of small calming waves arriving on the beach woke the exhausted teen up. The moon shone brightly in the sky.
"…Is this guy dead?"
Where am I?
"…Probably, not…"
What are they saying? A blurry image of two people standing in front of him came to Shoon.
"…shh…He's waking up…"
Where's Yabu?
"Yo, wake up, the both of you!"
Finally opening his eyelids clearly, Shoon used his remaining strength to get up, but he simply had no more left. "Where am I?" he managed to croak.
Two army-dressed men were standing in front of Shoon. They had green-camouflage color uniform and on their shoulder, a flag, but the exhausted teen couldn't make out the flag's details.
"What the hell is he saying?" one of the two said to the other.
The other shrugged. "I dunno, just take him to the commander…"
"What about the other one?" The first one asked the man.
"Take him too." The first one nodded and dragged Shoon up.
"What's going on?" the exhausted teen asked frantically, he tried to break away. Then a pressure on his forehead shocked the confused boy.
It was a gun.
"Move it!" One of the army men commanded. Shoon looked back towards his little companion. He was still fainted. The other man dragged Yabu from his sleeping position. "Stop! You're hurting him!" Shoon cried.
"Shut the fuck up bitch!" the man who held him shouted. But the worried teen wouldn't give up.
"Stop it!"
"Oh my god, you son of a bitch!" A sharp pain clashed on Shoon's forehead and the teen didn't know what happened next.

A white glaring light burned Shoon's eyes, forcing him to wake up. He slowly opened his eyelids. He was in a small, white room. The helpless teen looked around frantically, oblivious to the person sitting in front of him.
"Do you understand what I'm saying?" a monotone voice said to him.
Shoon turned to voice, shocked to see the person in front of him. He was a handsome young man, dressed in a military blue tunic. On his shoulders, five stars were planted on and again, the flag appeared.
"Yes." Both of their eyes were locked onto the other person's.
"So that means you're Japanese, correct?" Not knowing how to answer these bizarre questions, Shoon just nodded.
"Well then, welcome to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea." His words shocked Shoon, the person gave a shaking-gesture. Democratic People's Republic of Korea? Oh shit, am I in North Korea?
Shoon shook back reluctantly. "Where's my friend?"
"I think that you should worry more about yourself than your friend, but for your sake, he's in the next room." The man cleared his throat and continued.
"You are currently in Sunwi-do, a naval base of our glorious nation. My name is Seung Maeng, the commander of this base. As you can see, I'm fluent in your language."
"Your arrival is unexpected, or rather, inconvenient. However, you will be staying in our industrial section, which you are in right now, of the base. You and your friend will be staying until we can contact your country for your return."
Shoon was speechless, this seems like a nightmare to the shocked teen. The commander didn't care any less. "Now, please follow my guards to your room, your friend will be living with you in the same room too."
Two tough-looking soldiers dragged Shoon from his chair. "Take him to an empty cell." Maeng commanded the soldiers.
"Ye." The two soldiers replied. Then Maeng turned to Shoon. "Hope you enjoy your stay at our wonderful nation." With that, the commander left the room.
**********************************************
The rusty door opened and the two men threw Shoon harshly inside the cell. The older teen landed painfully on the rusty metal floor. The guards locked the cell door and left.
"Shoon!" a voice alarmed the painful teen. Shoon looked up and was relieved by the sight of his friend.
"Yabu!" Shoon exclaimed. He ran over to the little teen, huddled in the corner. They both hugged.
"Oh Shoon! I'm so scared…" the younger teen sobbed. Shoon caressed Yabu's hair and soothed, "It's ok, we're going to be fine…"
"No we're not, we're in North Kor…"
"Shh…don't say that…we're going to be fine…" Shoon hushed. The comforting adolescent looked around the room. It had no windows, there was a small bed, with a bed frame that looks like it was going to collapse any second. "Let's go to sleep ok? When we wake up, it'll all be fine." They both stopped hugging and Yabu wiped his tears.
"Really?"
"Of course," Shoon assured. Then, the older teen led Yabu to the rusty bed. Yabu climbed onto it. The chilling cold metal bed made Yabu shiver.
"I guess, we'll just have to sleep together." Shoon said. The younger teen nodded. "I like Shoon-kun to sleep with me!"
Shoon smiled, it felt weird, he hadn't smile for couple of days already. "Ok then," The older teen climbed onto the metal bed. There were no sheets or pillows provided, so Shoon didn't have to put on blankets. The older teen closed his eyes to sleep.
"Shoon-kun?" Yabu suddenly whispered.
"What is it Yabu?"
"Can…can you hug me to sleep? It's sorta cold…"
Shoon nodded. Then he wrapped his warm body around Yabu's small structure.
"Arigatou."
"Anytime. Now let's go to sleep, remember, it'll be all better tomorrow…" Shoon soothed.
Apparently, he was soon proven wrong.
**********************************************
A loud trumpet noise woke Shoon up from his sleep. What's going on? The music came from an intercom outside of the cell. It was a recording and Shoon didn't know what it was saying…
"Let morning shine on the silver and gold of this land,
Three thousand leagues packed with natural wealth.
My beautiful fatherland…"
It continued some gibberish that Shoon couldn't understand. At the last note, his cell's door opened.
Outside, there were many people, in rags, walking down the hall. They all looked like lifeless bag of bones.
Figuring that they should follow the people, Shoon tried to wake Yabu up, "Hey! Yabu, wake up!" The younger teen opened his eyes slowly. "What is…it Shoon…"
The crowd began to lessen, as the people left the cells. "Come on!" Shoon said, shaking Yabu out of his sleep.
Suddenly, sounds of a pair of boots alarmed Shoon. It was no other than Commander Maeng. He didn't change a bit, same outfit, same emotionless face.
"I figured that you wouldn't know the routines and the rules here in Sunwi-do." Maeng said coolly to Shoon. "Here at Sunwi-do, we provide things for our visitors to do that are productive…"
Shoon filched at the word, "productive."
"Since it's your first day, you'll start with some thing easy; you start with assembling guns..." Maeng continued.
Suddenly, the commander flashed his eyes to the little Yabu in Shoon's hands. "He's your friend?"
Shoon nodded reluctantly, nervous about the commander's sudden question. He stared at Yabu, emotionlessly, so emotionless that Shoon couldn't tell if he was admiring Yabu or plotting his demise.
After a few seconds, Maeng stopped his stare abruptly. He turned to leave. "Tell your friend what I just told you and get to work." The young commander said curtly and walked away.
**********************************************
Gun assembling soon proved to be much more difficult and tiring than both of them had expected.
They worked all day in the factory, pressing buttons and screwing gun parts. There were many people who worked with them, but nobody spoke to each other. The factory, of course, was in a horrific state.
The factory was windowless, making the environment extremely hot. There were two portraits and a North Korean flag hanging on the wall. The two portraits showed two different men on each one. The pair also choked on the nasty machine fumes. They burned their hands a couple of times on the fast-moving conveyer belt.
Lunch was served by trays riding on the conveyer belt. Each tray had a number of bowls of congee. Three-quarters of the "congee" were water and only had a few rice was inside. Getting lunch was also a problem, the conveyer belt, being really fast, didn't wait for people. It was like if you're not fast enough, you don't get lunch. Shoon, being stealthy, took a bowl with no trouble. However, Yabu, didn't manage to take a bowl of congee.
"Here you go, Yabu." Shoon said, giving the bowl to Yabu.
"But…" Yabu protested.
"Take it, it's ok, I'm not hungry." Shoon lied. In fact, he was very hungry but he didn't care. He would do anything for Yabu. The older teen shoved the bowl into Yabu's hands.
"Arigatou, Shoon-kun." Yabu said
Shoon smiled. "Don't mention it."
Work after lunch was much more difficult than the last shift for Shoon. With nothing in his stomach, Shoon worked terribly slow, not keeping pace with the conveyer belt. The famished boy couldn't concentrate enough on his work.
After three hours of work, they both were exhausted. Suddenly, a person came over to the both of them. It was Maeng. This time, he didn't talk to Shoon.
"You." He tapped Yabu's shoulder.
The innocent teen turned around. "Huh?"
"Come with me."
Shoon was alarmed. "Why?" he asked defensively, holding on to the little teen.
"He's been selected to a special service."
"Service?" Yabu asked innocently. The commander looked to Yabu, and caressed his hair. "Yes, my little Yabu, come with me…"
Service? Oh no, he's going to…no, I can't let him do this to Yabu…he's too young…
"No, I'll take his place." Shoon suddenly said.
Maeng narrowed his eyes to Shoon in surprise.
"You? You're not as cute as him…" the commander mused. "But I guess I'll take a sample of a Japanese ass, before taking the prize." Commander Maeng snickered, caressing Yabu's hair more. "I'll try you first, but be warned; it'll be rough…" Maeng smiled, a devil's smile.
Then, Maeng's guards grabbed Shoon's arms and dragged him out of the factory.
"Where are you going Shoon?" Yabu asked.
Shoon forced a smile, "I'll be back soon, don't worry…" Without finishing his sentence, the metal door slammed shut.
To Be Continued...
COMMENTS PLEASE!
I think that this fic really shocked you guys, especially the setting and political reference. North Korea, being a closed-gate, communist and dictatorship country. And of course, I did my research:
The naval base, Sunwi-do is
real
The industrial factories, commander and soldiers are NOT
Second of all, the cells/prison thing, is NOT real, also the conditions in it are NOT real, just in my mind it's terrible…
Ok, did that clarify everything? I hope so. Also, I hope that you guys aren't annoyed with language thing…it's really confusing sometimes…xD. BTW- "Ye" means "yes" in Korean.
Another thing was that the song that was played, was the North Korean Anthem, check it out
here
So this is the first chapter of it, it was long wasn't it? I was thinking of ending it at the part where they are going to sleep, but I really wanted to get on with the GOOD part in next chapter…I didn't write it yet though… This chapter took me quite a while…it took me like two hours…
Lastly, really sorry for the many scene changes…cuz there's so much to cover in this chapter, it's like two chapters in one…
Hope you guys liked this fic, and are continuing reading it! :
