inside a zoo, what a thing to do

Let's be honest. Plenty of boys go through a period in their lives when there's nothing that they want more than a dog. I had that phase myself. With books like Shiloh and Where the Red Fern Grows dominating children's lists of classic novels, it's impossible to grow up in the US and not be, at some point, accosted with the notion that a dog is man ( Read more... )

Luce has been watching the scene with some trepidation and wariness, unsure as to whether or not she should interrupt, but when the young man asks, she clears her throat -- as if begging entrance into the conversation. "I'm no expert," she warns, reaching out a hand to brush her thumb over the dog's fur, "But I'm going to suppose that either he wants your food or your affection. Or he could just be pining for your soul, but he does look a mite too cute for that."

It took a few months before Mark figured out that there were multiple people wearing Sarah Connor's face on the island. Multiple months before he finally stopped trying to conconcile the image of Sarah Connor running a florist's shop and somehow taking a sharp interest in all of the flowers presented there. Still, there's something about her expression that still commands the room even now, and with a furrow of his brow, Mark holds out the fork to the dog, as though offering the food- only pulling it roughly back when he realizes that he only has one fork for the moment, and a pretty empty stomach on top of that. Staring through the puppy's whine, Mark stabs at his food again, taking a small bite.

"I've never given him affection. He's new. City just dropped him on me a couple days ago," Mark explains as he watches Beast turn around to lick the newcomer on the fingers. "Must be the food. It's hard to figure out what a domesticated dog should eat in Victorian times."

"Well, then, it must be the food," she agrees as she crouches down in order to give the ears a gentle tug and a push back to inspect his face. "I'm not usually one for dogs, but yours is actually one of the most adorable things I've ever seen. Does he have a name?"

Too tired to think overly much about the woman who's just sauntered in and decided to dote upon his dog, Mark simply watches the interaction, learning from it what he can, preparing himself for the possibility of applying that type of attention and affection in turn later on. Maybe. Once he grows accustomed to the idea of having a pet at all. On Beast's part, the Puli looks no less than ecstatic at the sudden shower of attention, tail wagging at a mile a minute as he licks as close as he can to the tip of her tongue, shaking his head against her hands in an effort to pull closer.

"Beast," Mark says just then, eyes narrowing a touch. "His name is Beast."
