Well, flist, today I did something completely new and unheard of. If you are me, that is. I...exercised. In a gym. For an hour. Of my own free will.
I decided that while being a lump is really a lot of fun and requires no extra work from me, it might not continue to work out so well in the future, and I should probably at least try to learn better habits while I can do it for free and two minutes' walk from my apartment, so that when I'm no longer here, I can continue these things on my own. I don't believe in paying for something you can do just as well and easily for nothing, you see. The rec center here had this once a week "Ease into Exercise" class listed in their schedule that I figured would fit with that.
Of course, when I went today, only one other person showed up and the instructor was late. When he did arrive, he said that it was actually intended as a lecture class, mostly, and suggested some alternatives for the other person. He was nice enough to stick around and talk to me for a while about other options, based on what I was looking (and willing) to do, so it worked out pretty well, and he ended up sending me off to the (free) "Pump & Sculpt" class. The twenty minutes I spent in it seemed like the kind of thing I'm going for - that's where the other person ended up, too - and while it technically meets twice a week, I have class during the second time, so it'll still be the schedule I'd planned on.
Anyway. Um. We'll see how that goes.
In other news, my parents went to the auction this weekend for items from the now-closed Six Flags Astroworld. My father was initially interested in buying one of the six foot tall Bugs Bunny or Taz figures, for the backyard, but thankfully, the Warner Bros. stuff was not on sale. I mean. I love the little gnome we have (*shields RPG character's eyes*), but...yeah. Anyway, they ended up with a couple of ride signs. One was for one of the water rides, to go by our pool slide, and I forget what the other one was.
I had to O_o when I found out what they cost, which seemed excessive from my grad student's PoV and probably is anyway for freaking theme park signs, but I think my parents have figured out that it's okay to spend some of that money my dad makes, particularly since they'll be down to two, known-amount college educations to fund after this year. (The agreement we have is that they'll pay tuition and fees for four years, while we pay for our own housing/living expenses, so I'm well out of that but my third sister is finishing undergrad in three years and so they'll pay for her year of grad school to get her teaching certificate. Meanwhile, second sister is graduating this year, and youngest goes to an in-state school, so yeah, less money funneled to the UC Regents.) That, and the fact that they're seriously Empty Nesting now, I think also contributed to Christmas, which felt like, er, more than the usual budget.
This doesn't stop Dad from bitching about how much it'll cost to fly us all to Hawaii this summer, of course. We're set to go for a few days immediately after we're all out of school, which will sort of screw me up due to Lumos, but having talked it over with various people, I think it'll be okay. And, um, Hawaii! Yeah.
ETA: Are you a stickler for good grammar? Are you obsessed with the proper spellings of HP-canon terms? Do you understand the difference between question marks and quotation marks?
Then please, please, please take the
FictionAlley Fic Intake Team Quiz/Application and volunteer for Team FA. A commitment of eight hours a week is all that is required, and you can split it up among as many days as you wish. We really need new staffers, because during the launch of our new system, we didn't actively recruit, which leaves us a little short-staffed now. The more people we have on the team, the shorter the turnaround time for newly submitted fics!
