Found it!

Years ago, when I was in Australia, I ate a strange but tasty fruit that impressed me with its odd skin but perfectly normal taste. I never learned the name of the fruit, but always knew I'd know it when I saw it. Every so often, I'd remember the fruit, and wonder what it was.

Well, thanks to the wonders of the internets, google and wikipedia, I now ( Read more... )

Oh yes, it's so good to eat! It's one of the fruits I've missed eating since I moved here (US) from Manila. I think if you go to an ethnic store or Asian food store, specifically, you may be able to find Rambutan frozen and still in its skin.

Ohhh, I'll have to look into that! We've got several asian food markets in the area, so maybe one of them will have these. . . although. . . I suppose maybe they would freeze well. Hn.

For a while, I couldn't find what they were, and I thought maybe I'd hallucinated the spikey, tasty fruit. They never have it on any of the Travel Channel or Food Channel shows, either. I'm so glad they're *real*, and apparently pretty popular in areas where they're grown. (I was in Northern Queensland--Cairns or Townsville-- when I tried it, so I'm sure they were relatively local.)

Another fruit you might like is the Santol. I don't know if you're familiar with it. It's native to Thailand, th Philippines and other southeast Asian countries. The seed is inedible, or rather it sort of *is* but it's not advisable to eat since it can perforate the intestines, but the white "hairy"/fiberous/soft stuff AROUND the seed is really good.

If you google it and look at images you'll see what I mean. I've found santol frozen in its skin in the local Asian (though I guess it's technically a Philippine store since it's owned by Filipinos) store.

They kinda look like wet tribbles! Very cool, I love finding things that were once lost to me.
