Oh my word. I discovered an old document I had saved back in my New Zealand days. This is an exchange my Welsh friend Elen and I had while we were watching the Branagh adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing:
My Mom said she watched that movie with her friends and they were taking it all seriously (and I've read the play so I have no idea how) while she was biting her lip trying not to laugh while thinking of all of the snarky thing she and my Dad would be saying if he were there. I have the best family. ♥
But really, who cares about anything in that play but Benedick and Beatrice? I feel bad for Hero without really caring about her, which is the same way I was with Ophelia (poor Ophelia). But seriously, who pays attention to that plot when Benedick and Beatrice are running around being a thousand times more interesting and awesome?
I hate Hamlet the character too. Which keeps me from really liking the play. As much as I appreciate the soliloquies and all of his internal angst about his father dying and his mother immediately remarrying his uncle, but he's a fucking dick. And while I generally think Freud is a big quack, I find it really hard not to go with the oedipal interpretation of that play.
And yes, Claudio is a difficult character. STOP WHINING ABOUT YOUR TRUCK!
I also appreciate the alternate ending in the Retold version. Good stuff. Because really, would she take him back after all the shenanigans he put her through?
Seriously, Hero. The dude was in an awful big hurry to slander you in front of the whole fucking village and drag your name through the mud, and then he just has to cry a little and read a poem and POOF! all is forgiven and we can now be blissfully happy forever!! Whut. Check yourself. Before you wreck yourself. Girlfriend.
I hate how every year Mum asks me for ideas for Jesusmas prezzies, and I always struggle to think of anything. THEN, two weeks before Jesusmas, AFTER she's finished all of her shopping, I think of like twelve things I really and truly desire with all my heart. Like this on DVD, for instance. And Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, which I can't afford right now. WHARGARBLE.
