This is the first thing I thought of when I contemplated the pairing. Owls sound vaguely cuddly, but … they eat bats for breakfast!

Augh. Of course! I didn't ponder the fact that Owlman would find it equally as sickening, seeing his face arranging itself around a different moral compass-in lines of nobility or mercy, god forbid. It's a wake-up call for both of them.

LAWL YES, batarangs. I want an icon with that text on it. With Batman making a D: face. ILUILUUOMG. Your dialog snippet has Owlman with weapons OUT, so I was primed for it the whole time. But BATARANGS. I want Bats to fucking scream it, too, all NOTHING MAKES SENSE WHAT IS THIS SHIT ARRGGHH AT LEAST I UNDERSTAND ALLITERATION.

Also, owls. There is something called an Owlbear in D&D which is a bear with an owl head, which I thought was the stupidest thing ever until I went to a hawk show that had owls and I realized those things are fucking HUGE and TERRIFYING. Whereas in real life, bats are adorable.

and yeah, fic focuses on how Bats feels about it, but I think Owlman would be way bothered. Seeing yourself on the other side of the morality compass sucks regardless of where you start from.

Also: MERCY. I have become newly convinced that this is a huge and under looked part of Bruce's everything. I am going to make the fandom think about it, okay. IT IS MY MISSION.

I was sitting there trying to think of traits in Batman that would completely disgust Owlman, and mercy pretty much hit the top of the list.

I'm fascinated by that moment in BB where Bruce doesn't get to shoot Chill. It's like his whole life is hinged on this one moment of unfulfilled catharsis. I'm not sure how that translates into 'mercy', because it wasn't mercy that stopped him, just being pipped to the post by the fake!reporter, but it seems important and interlinked somehow.

OH. OH WOW. This is completely extraordinary! Amazing - I love it so much! Ooh, you just have Batman down PERFECTLY, the never-ending guilt and despair, and how Owlman can see that and use it so well against him. You have just got both of their characters SO well - Owlman is exactly as I imagine him - I love how he manages to question every single thing Batman is, from the moment he meets him. Like: "What, did you fall into that cave and latch on to the first thing that ever frightened you?" Oh, BUUUUUUUUUUURN!!!!!!!!!! I love it! :D

I am thriiilled that you enjoyed the smacktalk. I really think Owlman's reaction to Batman, besides the obvious rage, is to feel insulted and insulting, because he finds the good guy thing so weak. One of my favorite lines is the one about the cave you quoted back, so I'm like, ahhh. <3

Wow, can't wait for more! Really can't wait to see how Bruce deals with it - I do hope he finds some friendly vigilantes to help him... And yeah, the twisted reasoning behind it, as you said, REALLY works...
