Today I wrote most of a fic! And posted it! On AO3, anyway, I will remember to crosspost it here shortly. Probably. But because I'm feeling ficcish today, I'm going to start this meme, which I stole from hardboiledbaby.

Every day (consecutively or not), post about one of your fanworks ( Read more... )

Yay, you're playing! Sounds like you really had a breakthrough in your writing skills with this fic, how great is that? :D

I guess maybe I did? I hadn't thought about it overly much until this meme, but it was definitely an interesting challenge to write a fic for a character I didn't know or like well. (It was a prompt from a fic exchange.) It definitely underlined what I'd come to know...challenging myself with new styles and characters is almost always rewarding, and definitely makes me a better writer.

It's one of those things I love about writing...it only partially feels like conscious choices being made by you, at the end of it you can often be surprised by what's just happened!

Ooooh, extrapolating can be fun! :) That's some of the most interesting writing experiments, filling in those gaps...

Extrapolation is where you really learn to write characters. Mimicking what has already been presented is a skill, certainly, but taking what you know and expanding outward in a way that feels natural and makes sense...that's real writing.
