I was looking into DS games that I could get, and, um. I think maybe I'll just go and pick up Disgaea and see how that goes... (FFIV sounded way too scary).
I am typing around a cat. Please excuse any typos.zoifoxSeptember 21 2008, 11:45:40 UTC
Actually... well. FFIV was one of the first games I played, and so I'm not the most objective person in the world about it. Right now, I'm in the most frustrating part of the game, with the worst party setup, so I'm cranky. =)
The main thing about FFIV is that even with the new polish, it is very old-school. So there's a lot of level-grinding, and very little in the way of flexibility in terms of plot and party (i.e. the game tells you where you need to go, and gives or takes away party members as it goes along). Also, I'm one of those people who likes to do stupid things like fighting monsters that are too powerful for my party.
Everything in that list is plot-related, by the way. It has nothing to do with my screwing up. It's not as scary as it sounds.

*tilts head* I think I'll still go for Disgaea..... ^___^ If I manage that, I might try for other RPG; at least with Disgaea, I remember being hugely entertained by random plot information (FLUFFY!).

Technically, they aren't quite in the same genre - Disgaea is more of a turn-based strategy game than a straight RPG.
I still don't think FFIV is necessarily a bad choice; the gameplay is pretty straightforward, especially if you're new to RPGs. I know I'm biased, though.
On the other hand, with Disgaea you get prinnies!
(You might want to concentrate on the main plot in Disgaea and then do the bonus stuff and uber-levelling after you complete the game; that way, you don't wind up with a game that has well over four hundred hours logged on it despite only being on chapter six. *koff*)
I'm, um, sort of with Joann on this one. I'm sure it's a great game - it's just that I think I would have totally thrown it off a very deep cliff before getting even to this point. The constant shuffling of people in and out of your party, at least, would have made me fume a lot.
Although it does sound utterly hilarious when you summarize it like that. :)
And... I just fought Golbez in the Dwarf Kingdom (because it turns out that there are four more crystals nobody knew about, except that Golbez already has two of them, because we suck). He is much, much nastier than he was last time out (read: Total Party Wipe). So... yeah.
Also, I need to update the confirmed death toll; a member of Team Uber-Fail got himself killed right on schedule. On the bright side, Kain isn't evil at the moment.
...And Hollie has just dug my inhaler out from under my pillow. Naturally, she has claimed it as her toy. /non sequitur
Wait, you were massively overleveled and Golbez STILL took you out? Holy cow. That's some game.
... Um. Last night? Umaro looked like he was trying to sleep. So I tiptoed to the light switch and turned it off so he didn't have to squint to block out the light. We're so pwned, aren't we?
Heh. It turns out that he's much easier if you cast Slow on him before he starts killing off your party (which is scripted, by the way - he kills everyone off but Cecil, clearing the way for Rydia to make her glorious return... wait, did you play FFIV already? I don't want to be repeating things you already know).
After we got everyone else back on their feet, Rydia took him out with ONE SUMMON.
Squeenix changed a few things up for this version. For one thing, Golbez changes his weaknesses periodically.

Disgaea is fun! But it's a huge time sink. ^^
