Oh, yes, this would be angsty indeed. Though I think Rodney could come around and end up being all "Pah, even without hearing I'm still the best composer in the universe!"

For added angst, they could just be friends (but secretly wanting more) and when Rodney realizes what's happening he also fears John will leave because he won't want to manage a deaf musician. Which would obviously be wrong on all levels because John would know that not even being deaf could stop Rodney's genius, and even if he couldn't write a single note, he'd stay with Rodney because he loves him.
