Hey, Jer! V. has been asking me where is a good place (or places) to start reading X-Men for the first time. I think she is interested in some of the more recent reboots but also in the "classic" stories as well. My X-Men literacy is somewhat spotty so I was unsure how to advise. (Have gotten the same question from her re: Batman as well but I don't think you're as big a fan.) Any suggestions?

I'm working on a list, I know the issues but they've been collected in numerous different collections, so I want to make it easy to follow

Would it make sense to just start with Essential X-Men vol. 1 (the 1975 etc. run)?

Only good if already used to reading 70s comics. For somebody only used to reading modern comics or independent comics, plunging into the old 70s stuff can be like hitting a brick wall. Wasn't sure what the familiarity was there, I just know I gave The Dark Phoenix Saga to Becca and she just couldn't do it ( ... )
