The Landing Party [Gathering post/open to the involved]

Mar 30, 2010 12:17

Punctuating through the strange, silent world came a noise unmistakably mechanical in nature. Insistent and rhythmic, the grinding of metal against metal, the sound was soon accompanied by the arrival of a large blue box, fading into existence like it had emerged from mist. As the Doctor explained, the chosen landing site lay near the shore of a ( Read more... )

"Okay, so it IS bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. And now just like that we are on Earth. Doctor do you ever get used to all of this? Oh, and hand me one of those seismometers and I will give you a hand."

"Used to it?" He stared at Burt, brow furrowed in slight confusion. "I imagine that the day I get used to travel is the day I die...for the final time."

He offered the device over, then hefted a tall tripod in his arms, pointing to the spot in the console room where a collection of the pylons were leaning against the wall. "These will need to be distributed around the perimeter of the ship. Come along, Burt!" And he sprinted outside the ship.

'Come along Burt?' The phrase sounded wrong in his ears...Oh well, he is British, I think. "Hay Doc, one minute there. I am told you won't handle a gun but may be you could use this if you have to." Burt held out a foot long cylinder with a fuse sticking out of it. "A few household chemicals in the proper proportions! Makes a bang like a half stick of dynamite. My buddy Val once used one to get a Graboid to run in just the right direction, over a cliff. I figure a smart guy like you can find a lot of uses for it and I don't want you to be caught unprepared."

"Well, I suppose I ought to be grateful for human ingenuity," he said, taking the stick carefully between his hands. He turned it, studied it from all angles, before pocketing it casually. Hopefully, another of his pockets held the all-important matchbox for lighting the fuse if the situation deemed a 'big bang' necessary.

"What do you think the chances are that we'll actually encounter your large, pre-Cambrian friends, Burt?" They were a rather large party, after all, and though the TARDIS was masking her energy signature, she couldn't protect the entire group indefinitely.

Kirk stuck his head out, phaser at the ready, and got out of the way of the tripod unloading. He was preparing to stand guard as the perimeter was set up.

"Spock, any readings nearby that might be a graboid?"

"Negative, Captain. Though... the tricorder seems to be unable to penetrate more than a few meters into the rock. We must be receiving some sort of interference..." He thudded the heel of his hand against the device, scowling deeply.

"Can you locate the largest rock outcroppings less than one meter below the surface?" ie where to run.

"That is the difficulty, captain. Most of this is rocky outcropping. The graboids would have to maneuver between them." With an intent furrow, he followed where the out-croppings seemed to be most prevalent.

He had forgotten the healthy amount of nervous he felt around the Doctor. Obviously the appropriate solution was not to look directly at him whenever he was around him. That would help the matter, wouldn't it?

On his father's advice he patted the frame of the TARDIS door when he stepped outside. "I'll help you with one of those," he held out a hand in the Doctor's general direction. "Will the TARDIS allow us to understand the Sillurians? I hope to avoid as much confusion as possible."

"Ah, thank you." He stared at the tripod balanced between his arms. "This needs to be set upright at ten meters from the TARDIS, if you don't mind?

"Not to worry, Tiberius. She'll not leave us in an untranslatable lurch. The Silurians aren't so ancient a race that she won't know what to do with their language." He paused, gaze thoughtful as he regarded the android. "This won't be your first encounter with an alien race, will it?"

And... he had to actually look to take the tripod. Alright. He could do that. He flashed a nervous grin and took the instrument over to where the Doctor had indicated.

"I've had plenty of encounters. Though I find that diplomacy often works best when one can utilize a means of communication. Which can be even difficult within the same language, if the two parties can't manage to understand one another for whatever reason."

The android's avoidance only made the Doctor more curious about his behavior. "Tiberius, are you sure you're alright? We must stay vigilant in a place like this. Best not to...give in to distractions, eh?" Whatever those distractions might be.

He let out a thoughtful hum. His last few encounters with the Silurians hadn't ended well, true, but perhaps this time, things would be different? "I believe that if we convey our mission at the very start, we will be able to understand each other. I just hope we don't encounter their 'guard-dogs' first."

He waved outside the TARDIS, gesture vague. "Do choose a spot for the first pylon and then we can, ah, we can work on the perimeter fence from there."

Communication from landing party to station? grab_yourgun March 31 2010, 13:56:22 UTC
There wasn't anywhere else Starbuck felt more comfortable than in her cockpit, and after entering the planet's atmosphere she talked into her headset.

"Galac - " She stopped, catching herself before continuing. "Station this is Starbuck. The party has landed. I repeat, the party has landed. Commencing visual sweep ahead of the crew."

She was passing low, eyes scanning the terrain that didn't give her any hope at all about Earth. She knew that this wasn't the right Earth, but it was disheartening none the less. She expected lush forests and beautiful beaches with blue skies. Not this.

Rose had been lost in memories aboard the TARDIS. There was a part of her that didn’t want to leave it. She just wanted to stay there and remember but now wasn’t the time. That chapter of her life had been written and new adventure awaited. She stepped outside onto the planet surface and was assaulted once again by happy memories. She itched to take this Doctor’s hand and go exploring but of course she didn’t. His wasn’t the hand that she really wanted.

Instead she glanced around at the activity around her, “Who’s up for a bit of exploring?”

"You should probably take someone with a gun," volunteered someone with a gun. Pryce had stripped out of her Security uniform top, arms bare to vent some of the heat. She was from San Francisco, but this was just excessive.

Rose hoped that no guns would be needed but the girl was right. She also knew not to underestimate the ability of someone that looked young. She'd helped stop Word War 3 when she was only 19. Rose would trust that she knew when to and when not to shoot.

"That'd be great, thanks. I'm Rose, by the way."

"Corporal Pryce Haliwell, station security," the amazonian young woman offered, extending a hand. "If we keep an eye out for each other, then maybe we'll keep clear of those Grab-oids."
