The Landing Party [Gathering post/open to the involved]

Mar 30, 2010 12:17

Punctuating through the strange, silent world came a noise unmistakably mechanical in nature. Insistent and rhythmic, the grinding of metal against metal, the sound was soon accompanied by the arrival of a large blue box, fading into existence like it had emerged from mist. As the Doctor explained, the chosen landing site lay near the shore of a ( Read more... )

Exploring [OTA] comingwith March 31 2010, 17:38:25 UTC
Rose had been lost in memories aboard the TARDIS. There was a part of her that didn’t want to leave it. She just wanted to stay there and remember but now wasn’t the time. That chapter of her life had been written and new adventure awaited. She stepped outside onto the planet surface and was assaulted once again by happy memories. She itched to take this Doctor’s hand and go exploring but of course she didn’t. His wasn’t the hand that she really wanted.

Instead she glanced around at the activity around her, “Who’s up for a bit of exploring?”

"You should probably take someone with a gun," volunteered someone with a gun. Pryce had stripped out of her Security uniform top, arms bare to vent some of the heat. She was from San Francisco, but this was just excessive.

Rose hoped that no guns would be needed but the girl was right. She also knew not to underestimate the ability of someone that looked young. She'd helped stop Word War 3 when she was only 19. Rose would trust that she knew when to and when not to shoot.

"That'd be great, thanks. I'm Rose, by the way."

"Corporal Pryce Haliwell, station security," the amazonian young woman offered, extending a hand. "If we keep an eye out for each other, then maybe we'll keep clear of those Grab-oids."

Rose shook her hand, "nice to meet you, Corporal Halliwell. Wouldn't mind seeing a Graboid, from a distance mind you, but seeing another life form is always fun." She glanced left and right. "Any preference to where we should head?"

"I don't know how 'fun' I'd call it," Pryce said suspiciously. "You seemed to know what the Doctor was talking about, halfway. What are we looking for here?"

"Well I've never met a Graboid before." Rose fell back on her training with the Doctor and her time spent with Torchwood. "But I'd say we're looking for signs tracks from under the ground. Maybe clumps of dirt like a mole. If we avoid those, we should be good."

Rose reached inside a pocket of her jeans and pulled out a coin. "Right then. Heads we go left and tails right." She grinned, thinking of the times with the Doctor when they just went without thought to anything. Rose tossed it in the air, "I'll let you call it."

"But aren't we supposed to be looking for Slurians?"

“Oh sure, but if we know what to watch out for with the Graboids, or guess anyway, we won’t be surprised while looking.” Not that being surprised was necessarily bad. Sometimes the best times she had was when a surprise or three were thrown her way.

"All right." PRyce squared her shoulders and lifted her gun. "II'll keep you from getting killed."

"Thanks, I appreciate that. Not ready to die just yet." She smiled at Pryce and began walking to the right. "Hopefully we'll start to see signs of habitation."

"What does Slurian habitation look like?" Pryce mangled the name, looking around.

Rose thought through the Torchwood reports. The Doctor had never told her about them but Torchwood, before she came to live in Pete's World, had. "They live underground, mostly in caves." She looked ahead along the landscape. "There's a lot of spaces in that outcropping, but I don't know if they're spaces or caves."

She sighed, "Also, they communicate with each other telepathically. They could easily see us coming and warn the others of intruders and we'd never know."

"I should have been a telepath instead," Pryce grumbled dourly.

Then the ground shifted under her, and for a moment she thought it was a graboid attack--

Until she saw that everything else was rumbling, and recognized the feeling-- a low level quake.

"...Okay, Earth is a little shaky right now. I feel I could have been warned."

Rose felt both a moment of panic and exhilaration and laughed self consciously. “I reckon we’ll be a little jumpy every time it moves.” She was expecting to be attacked any moment but that was her life with the Doctor and Torchwood.

“I wonder if that bloke ---“ She searched her memory coming up with the name, “Gummer, can tell the difference between the Earth moving about and a Graboid coming up.”

"I hope so," she grumbled. "It all feels like an aftershock to me. It's a good thing those Graboids aren't in SanFran-- people would gnore them right up until they got eaten."

Double-checking her pulse weapon to make sure she was loaded, she started off again, chin up and eyes steely, as if she actually knew where she was going.

Ah, the fine art of confident bullshit.
