Under New Management [OTA; tag Peri for Scotty]

If there was one thing that most Starfleet officers could agree on, it was that coffee was the best way to start the morning. Lots of it.

Replicators were notorious for never getting the taste quite right, so the cafes in the San Francisco area always did pretty well - especially when shore leave came around ( Read more... )

Peri had plans to meet the Doctor in the cafe for lunch, and she made it to the place before him. For a Time Lord, the Doctor wasn't really that punctual, and she knew he was gonna be late regardless. She wandered into the establishment, taking it all in. The tables. The people (were they still staring at her?). And the crumbs.

The crumbs.

She was chuckling a little as she watched the man eagerly chomping down on his sandwich and continually wiping those crumbs off his computer...thing. "D'you need a napkin or something?"

Scotty's attention was so focused on what he was doing, he didn't notice the girl approach. So when she spoke, he practically jumped out of his chair, dropping the sandwich directly onto the PADD.

"Oh!" He glanced over at the mess of crumbs directly on the screen, shaking his head. "Aye, I think I could do with a napkin right now." Looking up at whoever was talking, Scotty nearly did another double take - seeing a very familiar face. Familiar in that it had previously been seen on the Captain..and himself.

"Uh, lass, I dinna mean to pry, but are ye..." actually a lass, he didn't add.

Kinda uppity guy, she thought, as she checked the place out for napkin dispensers. She tugged a couple of napkins from the nearest dispenser and handed them over to the man.

"Um...yeah, I'm the girl everyone was, for a little while, at least. I mean it wasn't my fault or anything! It just...happened." She'd blame the Doctor if she could, but he wasn't responsible either.

"I'm Peri Brown," she added, crossing her arms defensively. "Don't tell me you were infected too? I-I'm sorry..."

Scotty looked up at her. "Thanks," he said, taking the napkin and using it to clear away the crumbs. "Montgomery Scott," he offered. It was true what he had said to Avon and others - she was very pretty girl, indeed.

"And I was you for a while, until Dr. McCoy and the others fixed it." He gave her a friendly smile. "But I dinna blame ye, lassie." He indicated the chair next to him. "Are you waitin' on anybody? I could do with the company."

An investigation of the promenade was turning out to be rather curious. A cafe' she had never noticed before seemed to have the faint smell of actual coffee. A heavy coffee drinker herself, she could tell the difference between the artificial stuff and the real. It indeed was not the same and did not provide the same kick of caffeine one needed to get through a work load at midnight. She veered into it and ordered herself a coffee, black, adoring the aroma coming from the cup. She raised an eyebrow at the man next to her who seemed rather surprised over something.

"Something wrong?"

Pike was still having trouble getting the attention of the people behind the counter - once they had handed him the papers, they seemed to go back to ignoring him.

"Some employees you are," he grumbled, before noticing the woman next to him, who was most certainly not ignoring him.

Pike looked over in her direction, taking a sip of much needed coffee as he did so. "Apparently, I am the proud new owner of this cafe."

"Congratulations?" She raised an eyebrow slightly. The idea of not knowing you owned a business upon walking in was a little odd. "This place is full of surprises, abrupt ownership, however, is a new one."

"I've been told," he said, "that this place sometimes assigns you to areas where they think you may be of some use. I know a medical friend of mine was assigned to sickbay." He still wasn't used to this particular McCoy, but the doctor had taken it upon himself to visit Pike, making sure that his leg was healing nicely.

"Only trouble is, I'm a Starfleet Admiral. We may consume more coffee in a year than the entire faculty of Starfleet Academy put together - but this is just ridiculous." He chuckled. "Whoever is ultimately in charge of this place, they certainly have a wicked sense of humour."
