Ugh.
But does this sort of stuff generally happen less under a different government? I have so little trust in people in general that I doubt it highly.

I think that all governments do things of which I personally will disapprove. I think that governments are only as good as the people making them up. This particular government is made up of people whose political careers represent a history of broken promises, self-serving ruthlessness, and dishonour: the new Conservative party was created from broken promises, from the most self-serving, ideological dregs of the Reform and old Progressive Conservative parties. Ideologically, they're Canada's most right-wing party, and they are way less responsive to public opinion or criticism than any government in recent history ( ... )
