AHHHHHHH I LOVED IT. In addition to the amazing eye-and-style-candy all the character moments. Nic Lea's performance as Ness, his conversation with Dean in the car. This is a thru-line this season, Dean struggling and questioning, why keep doing this, with the weight of all the losses. Bobby, Frank, and now Eliot Ness have told him to suck it up but it seems like the narrative itself doesn't mean for this to be The Answer. Dean is still searching and I wonder if he'll confide in Sam soon. Sam and Dean rock-paper-scissors! Frantic and worried Sam saving Dean, Sam falling asleep on his research and refusing to go to sleep, oh Sam. SAM'S SMILE YES. THE BOYS COMMUNICATING ACROSS TIME. Jody and Sam's conversation about the bottle of whiskey. <3<3

That convo with Ness! YES! I was like, OMG! A hunter who didn't get into the life by depressing, bloody ways, a new perspective for Dean! It's coming from a guy who knew another life before, but that life wasn't ruined by the hunt crossing his path. His whole comment about hunting being the cleanest focus you could ask for in this life really was a nice underline for the season.

There was so much in this episode, I totally forgot about the rock-paper-scissors! I love how that was all communicated with one line. Dean switching up his scissors for once and Sam catching it before he does it was LOVE.

The bottle of whiskey though, so well done. I love how multi-layered it was too. Because you get Jody and Sam's emotions in finding it, and the expectance that they'll drink it together in the near future when Dean gets back in memory of Bobby, but you also get a small addition to Bobby and Rufus history too. I love that.

I really liked Ness' perspective on things. The red tape comment, how hunting gave him clarity. Ness seemed pragmatic and a little cynical--everyone will lose everyone and then your own number is up. Life sucks and then you die pretty much so why worry over this. It's interesting that he seems to be someone who wants to make a difference--he's in law-enforcement--but feels so hemmed in by regulations he feels hobbled and hunting gives him a clearer purpose. Because Sam and Dean exist outside normal boundaries of society and laws. Meanwhile we've gone from Dean's comment early in the series about "perks" to where we are now, where the perks of that freedom are outweighed by the drawbacks (no secure place to sleep, too many losses, cold, or hungry, squatting in abandoned houses).

There was indeed lots of lovely goodness in this one, though I haven't watched it a second time yet. Funny, I didn't actually notice the music so it was strange to find you not only noticed but thought it was intrusive. I thought they really nailed the mix of comedy, tension and the odd poignant moment in this one so well.

Hee, well, I've always got score brain, I can't really turn it off. To be completely fair, I'm a hugeeee critic when it comes to 40s music. So I prepared myself for the idea that I was going to be hard to please. It's a tall order for a composer to come up with realistic 40s score within the normal TV turnaround timeframe. There were some good spots, and then there were some...hokey spots that made me wonder if the order was more for parody 40s score this time around. And it came off sounding derivative? IDK, Monster Movie's was A++ in emulating 30s film score, but it served as more a pastiche than a parody. I think about this stuff far too much. :)

But I agree, the episode itself nailed the perfect recipe mix for me as well. That's why it will still go down as one of my favorites of the season.

I liked it too!

That song came to mind as soon as I saw the title!

I loved how we got to see both Sam and Dean; I was afraid it would be too focused on Dean, but thankfully the writers got them in sync.

I also watched the PCAs and was very upset...I'm off to watch that video now.

The song will not get out of my head! And every time I start, I think about the whole Sam trying to go to sleep and then seeing his name all Dean-etched in the wall. XD

They did the in sync Winchesters thing so well! I was remembering 'The Usual Suspects' and how they played the boys apart there, when they were doing the identical researching in two different time periods here. I think I liked this episode better than that one though.

Hope you enjoyed the video, it gave me a good fistpump feeling that the broadcast robbed us of.

I think that if the love interest hadn't been as forced I would have loved Jason's performance more. It was odd to have to ground him that much to 1944 without giving us more insight into their relationship.

But man, I did love Dean the fanboy with Eliot Ness.

Yea, the forced love interest was kinda a problem. The script could have done a better job with that. I did ADORE his first scene where he was fighting Ness all badass and then the girl appeared and he got that silly sap face on him. He still does that very well. Unfortunately the scenes in the house...well, he's done better work.

The Dean fanboying is always total LOVE though. His little bits about "that's how you do it!" were so adorable, and backs up my rather depressing headcanon that Dean learned far too much about life through the movies growing up.

I re-watched his adorable reaction to getting to hold a Tommy Gun a few times.

Came in for JDoh, stayed for Dean in 40s hair and wardrobe and spending time with a personal hero. So cute!
