It didn't actually need a happy ending, just a hopeful one. Which it does. Tommy knows what he needs to do, he just needed the will to do it. He lost Adam, and he has to live with that.

Yeah, Tommy really got himself into something he can't fix. He can't get Adam back, so he had to help himself now. And he accepts it, which is the hard part.
