I think Phorusrhacos' closest relative are the seriemas, which are distant kin of falcons/caracaras. So...

Yeah -- they're in that kind of blended state, and I wasn't sure if they'd classify as passerine, raptor, ratite, or none of the above. ;) I did a bunch of scattered reading about the Great American Interchange and the flip of fauna between north and south America, and prior to that, migration of South American animals via Antarctica to Australia...

Dangit, now I'm all curious about the details of the phylogenetic relationships... My gut-feeling is it's not technically a raptor, nor ratite.. More like the case of the Thylacine, which looks like a member of the Carnivora (big, nasty, pointy teeth!) but is actually a marsupial. Regardless of its technical classification, that would be one crazy bird. Gastornis is another one I wouldn't want to run into in a dark alleyway.

That.. looks awesome. So much I want to mourn the gryphon it once belonged to. ;)

Randomly, whenever I go to visit supremegoddess, I pass by this place: http://www.skullsunlimited.com I thought you might find it interesting. Esp. with what they have on the front page right now. *halo*

When's a good time to catch you for a wee bit of chat anyways?

That is very interesting! I was thinking this morning about what I would build a miniature gryphon out of. I somehow think a smaller model would be even cooler than a large one...

I'm on gchat sporadically -- do you ever sign on there anymore? I've been trying to keep chat services to a minimum so I can get things done...

That is fantastic. May I ask roughly how much it set you back? I'd love one.

Roughly $200 without tax. A lot to drop on something seen in a window, but I'd never seen one before and didn't want to risk someone else snapping it up. :) They're made by a guy in Los Angeles, and I know the Bone Room ships things to people, so you could probably contact them via the website. :)
