“There’s really no way to reach me
‘cause I’m already gone.”
“Vienna” - The Fray

The second night Cameron was there, she, Chase and Foreman went out to a bar. They’d gone there many times before and she was glad that they had gone somewhere that she’d never seen House go. She was looking forward to just relaxing with her friends.

She was playing pool with Chase and almost done with her second drink when she saw him. He was sitting at the bar with Wilson, both with a beer.

She downed the rest of her drink and lined up her shot; a miss.

“Fuck.” She hissed and looked down at her empty glass. “Foreman, could you please get me another drink?”

Looking a little surprised - Cameron rarely swore - Foreman nodded and headed for the bar.

“You sure you want another drink?” Chase asked, lining up his shot; score in a side pocket.

“Definitely.” She replied.

He shrugged and proceeded to miss his next shot.

Foreman returned with her drink and she took a big gulp. “They’re not gonna run out.” Foreman said, eyeing her warily.

She didn’t reply and sank her last ball. Last shot; eight ball in the corner pocket. Grabbing her drink, she handed her pool cue to Foreman. “I have to make a phone call.” She went over to the payphones but used her cel phone. The answering machine picked up the two times her called.

“Hey this is Dan…”

“Damnit.” She muttered as she closed her phone.

“Staying or visiting?”

She sighed and turned to see House, who had come up behind her. “Visiting. I came to see Foreman’s daughter.”

“Right.” He said and nodded at the phone in her hand. “No answer?”

“I see you’ve mastered the fine art of small talk.” She took another big sip of her drink. She didn’t want to be talking to him; she was still emotional about the end of their relationship, even though it had been a little over a year before. “Excuse me.” Keeping her eyes down, she pushed past him and went back over to Foreman and Chase.

They had stopped playing and had grabbed a small table to sit at.

“Everything ok?” Foreman asked.

“Just fine.” She said, attempting to sound convincing.

Chase looked at his watch and groaned. “I have clinic duty first thing in the morning if we don’t get a case.”

“I should get home, too.” Foreman said, setting down his glass.

“I’m going to finish my drink.” Cameron said, actually looking forward to a fourth one.

“Are you sure?” Chase was the worried on now.

“Yeah,” She waved him off. “I’ll call a cab to take me back to my hotel.”

Both men looked unsure but in the end it was Cameron’s speech -being a grown woman who can take care of herself- that got them to leave.

Even though she was way past being buzzed, she ordered another drink when the time came. From her table, she had seen Wilson leave and assumed that House had soon followed.

When was she going to learn not to assume things?

“What number is that?” House asked, stopping next to her table.

“Number two.” She lied. For some reason, she felt like she would seem weak if he knew she was drinking heavily.

He nodded slowly and she knew that he knew. “Let me give you a ride home.”

“On the back of your motorcycle? No, thanks.” She spoke into her glass and drank when she was done.

“I have the ‘vette.”

She stood up and faced him. “I’ll get a cab. I don’t think it’s a good idea for us to be alone together.”

“Why?” He raised an eyebrow and that powerful ‘in control of the situation’ look came into his eyes. “Are you afraid something might happen?”

All she could do was roll her eyes because, as usual, he was right. That was exactly what she was afraid of.

Cameron had started bringing Aiden to the daycare in the hospital and spent some of her lunches with him. That day, she had taken him to the cafeteria with her and was now dropping him off.

On her way out, she waved and said goodbye to the daycare’s employees. The automatic door slid open and she gasped when she stepped into the hall.

“Sorry!” Wilson said immediately, taking a step back. It hadn’t been his intention to practically run her over.

She let a long breath and smiled a little. “It’s ok… I thought you were House.” She shook her head, then added dryly, “It wouldn’t have surprised me if he had been out here waiting.”

“Yeah.” Wilson said, sounding apologetic for his friend’s behavior. “When he concentrates on something, he really… well, you know how he is.”

She nodded. ’If only he had been this focused on me when we were together.’ “Was there something you needed me for?”

“No, I just wanted to come talk to you for a minute.”

She looked expectantly at him.

“I just want you to know, you can come talk to me if you ever need to. Being House’s friend, I know how much of an ass he can be more than anyone else.” He paused. “Well, maybe not more than you, but at least the same.”

She smirked. “Thanks, Wilson, but he’s your best friend. I don’t want to put you in that situation. He just needs to calm down and focus on something else.”

He agreed but they both knew that House forgetting about Cameron was a long shot.

“Get out of the way!” House barked.

Brendt jumped and quickly stepped away from the coffee counter; the same one House had broken into when they were diagnosing the little boy, Ian, with Erdheim-Chester's disease. Foreman and Chase were sitting nearby in a waiting area. Foreman was reading a medical journal and Chase was sitting there with his head leaning back with his eyes closed.

Brendt walked over to them and sat down in a chair. “He seems like he’s in a worse mood than usual today.” He grumbled to Chase and Foreman.

Chase and Foreman shared a look and Foreman went back to his magazine.

“You haven’t really seen House when he’s distracted.” Chase started to explain.

“He’s always distracted! By the case, by the tv, by his gameboy…”

“This is different.” Chase shook his head. “This happened a couple times before, when Cameron was still here. The best way to deal with it is to just ignore it.”

Brendt was about to complain further but House walked over to them.

“Nice to see you’re all working hard.” He said sarcastically. “Brendt, you’re on clinic duty.”

“But I’m not scheduled-“

“You have clinic duty.” House repeated.

Brendt looked to the other two men, hoping for back up or something; something other than what he got. Foreman and Chase were ignoring the situation. Huffing inwardly, Brendt got to his feet and tried not to look like a child as he stomped his way to the elevators.

Sipping his coffee, House walked away, leaving the other two members of his team to do whatever they wanted.

On the main floor, Cameron was coming out of Cuddy’s office when she ran into Brendt.

“Hi Brendt.” She said warmly.

“Hey.” Brendt replied sullenly.

“How do you like being on House’s team?”

“Usually it’s fine.”

He definitely seemed irritated.

“Is something wrong?” She asked, hoping they hadn’t lost a patient or anything along those lines.

Brendt lowered his voice so only she could hear him. “House is being a prick lately; apparently because he’s distracted.” He rolled his eyes.

“Ohh.” She nodded slowly. “I understand. He used to get that way when-“

“Save it.” Brendt snapped, taking Cameron by surprise. “I don’t care about what he used to do or him being distracted. He’s still an asshole.”

She frowned. “Maybe it’s the case you’re all working on-“

“We’re not even on a case.” He rolled his eyes. “I know exactly what’s distracting him. It’s you.”

She sighed unhappily.

“Why don’t you do us all a favor and stay away from him?! It would make everyone’s lives so much easier.” He said harshly and stalked into the clinic.

It was a good thing he didn’t expect an answer because she was speechless, surprised by his outburst.

’Stay away from House? God knows, I’m trying my best.’
