And give yourself away.
‘Heaven Forbid’ - The Fray
A few years before, room 2134 had been one of House’s hideouts; it had a tv that had a remote instead of a giant dial on the front and the chairs were slightly more comfortable since they weren’t used very often. Technically, House wasn’t alone, but the coma patient obviously never bothered him.
His feet were up resting on the edge of the hospital bed and his soap was on the tv. He had finished his lunch already, but he didn’t really feel like going back to his office. And even though there was supposed to be some ‘big shocker’ on that day’s episode of his soap, he didn’t even try to concentrate on it.
Cameron had been back for a whole week and he still couldn’t stop thinking about her; about what she had said that first day. He had a hard time imagining her with someone else - with a husband. And a son?
For a moment, House wondered how old her son was and if she was as good of a mother as he had always expected she’d be. Then he wondered how long she’d been married. He didn’t care what her husband was like; as far as House was concerned, the guy was a loser. He knew all these questions were going to keep bugging him.
He wanted to know, so he was going to find out.

“So by the end of the party, he was trashed. Wilson had to take him home.” Foreman laughed, telling Cameron about House at the hospital’s holiday party two years before.
“The next day, House was pissed ‘cause his motorcycle was left in the parking garage over night.” Chase chimed in.
“Ohmigod.” Cameron sighed with a slight smile, running her hand down the side of her face. She knew he loved that motorcycle a lot more than anyone else knew.
The three of them sat in the hospital’s cafeteria, eating lunch. Since being there, this was the first chance they had all been free to sit down and catch up.
“So how has work been in general?”
“Tough.” Foreman replied.
“Yeah. We’ve had four immunologists since you left, including Brendt.” Chase shook his head.
“What happened to the first three?” Cameron asked, surprised.
“House fired one of them and the other two quit.” Foreman rolled his eyes. “I’m sure you don’t need to ask why they quit.”
“Why did he fire the other one?”
“She… kept making passes at him.” Chase said hesitantly, but quickly explained the situation. “We think she was just trying to get perks or something. She wasn’t really that good of a doctor.”
Cameron could feel heat rising up in her face and she looked to side a bit.
“Cuddy hired her right after you left because House wouldn’t hire anybody.” Foreman continued.
“She was a bitch, too.” Chase mumbled, a look on his face as if he had just tasted something bad. He straightened up when he saw them both looking at him in surprise. “The girl, not Cuddy.”
Foreman rolled his eyes again and Cameron held back a laugh.
Even though she was married and had a son, Cameron was still very curious about what had happened at PPTH since she had left. She had come back about a year after her move to visit for a few days, but hadn’t gone to the hospital. Foreman and his girlfriend Angela had had a daughter and Cameron had, of course, accepted Foreman’s invitation to visit. She thought that if she steered clear of the hospital, she would have a nice visit without seeing House.
But, of course, she had been wrong.
House had shown up one night at a bar where she, Chase and Foreman had gone to catch up and have a good time.
She thought about that visit a lot; almost every day. And now, being in the same building with House every day certainly wasn’t going to help.
She wanted to ask so many more questions, but their pagers went off before she could. Foreman and Chase glanced at their pagers and stood up.
“Want to catch the elevator up with us?” Chase asked her as the two men picked up their food trays.
“No thanks. I’ve got clinic duty.” She replied, half frowning at the thought of listening to panicky patients who usually misdiagnosed themselves on the internet.
Foreman gave a short laugh. “Have fun.”
“Yeah, thanks.” She said sarcastically.
Foreman and Chase left for House’s office and Cameron finished her lunch.

An hour later, Cameron had seen five patients and had a half an hour to go.
On her way to exam room three, she scanned the next patient’s file. His name was John Davis and the check in sheet he had filled out said he was having chest pains. She walked into the room, still focused on the file.
“Hello, Mr. Davis, what seems to be the problem?” she asked.
“So, what’s wrong with him?”
Cameron looked up, puzzled by the question, but instead of finding the patient, she found House sitting on the exam table.
“Where’s Mr. Davis?” She asked, completely confused.
“I don’t know.” House shrugged. “Probably at work or something; it is 1:30.”
She closed the file and put her hands on her hips. “You pulled a file for someone who isn’t even here just so you could get me alone?!”
“I don’t know why you’re surprised. I do things like that all the time. You should know that.”
She tossed the file on the counter, her anger making her not want to even look at him.
“So what’s wrong with him?” He asked again before she became huffy and started lecturing him about whatever he had done wrong.
She turned her head to glare at him. “Excuse me?”
House rolled his eyes as if his question was as specific as it could get. “Your first husband had cancer, I was a miserable bastard… so what’s wrong with this guy?”
Her eyes became darker with the anger growing inside of her. He had cornered her to drill her about her husband?! The curious, yet smug look on his face wasn’t helping her emotions at all either.
“For your information,” she said in a dangerously low voice, “there’s nothing wrong with him. And it looks like you’re still a miserable bastard.” She grabbed the file off of the counter and stalked out of the room.
House had been expecting her to react the way she had, but even though she had answered his question, he still found himself becoming more and more curious.

That night was like any other night to Cameron. She picked her son, Aiden, up from the sitter’s house, when home and made dinner. Her husband Dan came home a half an hour after she and Aiden got there and they all ate dinner together.
Aiden was 3 years old but was calm for his age. Cameron assumed that his wild phase just hadn’t begun yet.
After dinner, Aiden picked out a movie and watched it quietly while she and Dan cleaned up the kitchen. They talked about work; Cameron’s patients at the hospital and Dan’s cases at his car insurance job.
She was almost done with the dishes when Dan stopped to look at the calendar on the wall, next to the refrigerator.
“Is there something going on this weekend?” She asked.
“No.” He paused as if he had interrupted himself. “Well, there could be.” He could tell by the look on her face that she was completely confused. “Why don’t we invite your friends from the hospital over dinner this Saturday night?”
“What?”
“I’m serious.” He laughed at how surprised she seemed.
“Well… I mean, what about people from your job?”
Dan shrugged. “I don’t really know any of them. You know all the people from the hospital already. I can finally meet all of the friends you’ve told me about.”
Cameron smiled warily. “I guess so. But they might already have plans.”
“Lets try for Saturday but if they have plans we can try for another weekend.” He reached out and squeezed her hand.
“Ok.” She gave in.
“Great!” He kissed her quickly and went over to finish cleaning the kitchen counter.
Dan kept talking about dinner on Saturday night (if everyone could make it) but Cameron barely heard him. She had quickly thought of everyone she would invite, and -of course- the only person she couldn’t invite.
The only problem was, how could she throw a dinner party for her friends at PPTH without House finding out about it?
