I am being encouraged to blog, in general and in specific relating to fandom, activism, and crafting. So here I am trying to get back into the groove.  There are some things that I should accept and get over as long as I am blogging, things that I think have been contributing to my "write and delete before posting" habits of late ( Read more... )

I try to avoid author interpretations. In my critique group it's always interesting to hear about what a writer intended, but most of the time there are themes or elements that all the readers/critiquers saw but the author didn't know about. It's also what makes things like book clubs fun, because everyone's interpretation can be different and the varied perspectives generate good discussions.

Yes, this! There's always something somebody finds in my critique circle that the author had NO IDEA was in there. It always happens, no exceptions. It's silly to think that an author should have that kind of authority just because they penned the words. They don't have infinite perspective.
(same reason why something much beloved by many can cause harm or offense in others...)

Hooray blogging! :D

I think I should take a page out of Drusillas_Rain's book and try to ignore creator intent as best as I can. Or at least, try not to seek it out. I guess my error lies in being all "What? They did THAT in a scene? Does that mean what I think it meant?" about something that particularly goes against my beliefs; and then I have to go digging around to find out the truth...and generally being disappointed/jaded in the creator's response, heh.

KORRA!!! \o/ \o/ \o/

I am still totally excited for Korra. somebody posted to Facebook about it yesterday and I was FULL OF SQUEE. :D

I may have to try that 'avoiding authorial commentary' thing myself, not that there isn't plenty of objectionable stuff out there without it. ah, media.
