This is really interesting article for me since I am Korean. So I read this well and kind of want to answer your curiosity. It may be difficult for you to understand the context of the culture since you lack knowledge of Korean history as you mentioned. For a few hundred years, Confucianism from China affected Korean society in large. One of lessons from Confucianism is that giving a birth to a son is very important for women. Thus, those women who gave a birth to a son wanted to show off as people in that era considered it as very honorable.
