There’s this song, you may have heard it. It has this line in it that I would totally have loved when I was 19 and stupid. Here’s the offending chorus:

Who doesn’t long for someone to hold

Who knows how to love you without being told

Hear, hear! I seem to run into so many people who appear to believe that line in the song and then get super-pissed when they find out that life doesn't work that way. They also seem to take it amiss when I point that out to them when they ask me "Why?!" in that particularly plaintive "I am upset at the universe's inequity" sort of way. Kudos for doing so well at identifying that behavioral idiocy.

Oh, the plaintive why! Maybe it's because I know I was guilty of it a decade ago and we always seem to hate our worst behaviors when we see them in others, but that sense of entitlement just makes me want to grind my teeth and growl. And maybe do some smacking.

Absolutely. And sometimes, you have to re-evaluate what you think you need, which can also be painful. But you'll know yourself better after.

God, I so agree. My ex-husband was a master of the hidden, the indirect, the need for mind-reading (on my part). He'd even hide the fact that he *was* upset--I had to figure that out, and then figure out what to do about it. Gah. Communication is so much better...
