[Where was this? He had been in the Wasteland, hadn't he? Sand in his face, cloak a futility against it, howls of wind and something else, and then...
[...And then the sand cleared. He brushes sand off automatically, noting with some surprise that aside from a few grains caught in the fabric, there's very little to brush off. He pulls the hood down, letting it settle on his shoulders, and blinks in astonishment. It's definitely not the desert. For one thing, the desert doesn't have quite this much water...]
Lake Hylia...?
[How did he end up here? He starts walking, sticking to the ledges and high places, jumping slightly when a traumatised voice rings out.
[It's a boy - younger than him, dressed in green, sword stuck deep in the sand. Sheik eyes it for a moment.
[The voice catches him entirely off guard; he yells and tries to jump up and turn around and draw his sword, but it doesn't quite work and he falls over again.
[No, not a monster -- a person. He blinks at the person, but he isn't even entirely sure he's seeing the person right, let alone who it might be.
[He finally manages to calm his pounding heart and sit up again, forcing a weak smile.]
I... I'm sorry about that. I'm just skittish.
[He sighs.] No, there are no monsters here... at least out of my dreams.
[Sheik blinks at the flailing. For a moment, he remembers that the Hero of Time wears green and (will) carry a sword, but - no, this boy can't be Link. He doesn't exactly appear to be hero material.]
[Thoughtfully.] Even the best of us may have monsters in our dreams.
I do not believe so. My name is Sheik. And you are?
[He doesn't quite offer his hand, but his body language shifts to somewhat less wary.]
[He chuckles weakly.] Monsters and nightmares, all of us. The Nightmares, at least, can be destroyed with enough skill, but... some things just cannot be forgotten.
Sheik? [Does he know someone by that name? He can't remember.] Nice to meet you, Sheik. I'm Link. I'm not exactly in the best shape right now... I'm sorry.
[Zelda is back in Kakariko, dusting the mantelpiece. She does not know where Link is, or what he's been doing. But she has hopes that he's going to join her and the others for lunch, and so she reaches out to him in her mind.]
[He hears her voice, but it joins in the rest of the noise in his head. Link doesn't realize he's being spoken to at all. He just lays there on the sand, trying to ignore the memories and chase away the nagging question: What if he had stayed on Koholint...?]
[She waits, but there is no answer. She gives an audible sigh, which he probably can't hear.]
{{All right, well. Lunch will be ready soon, Link. We would be -- I would be -- happy if you came back to eat with us. Just...be careful, wherever you are.}}
[He's been exploring this new Hyrule for the last few days. It was surprising how quickly one could learn to appreciation the lightposts or the power of transportation the darkness had when had had to wander around a new world for a few days.
He's mostly been avoiding people, wanting to know the area before learning of the people. This time, he just happened to spot him. That all too familiar green tunic. He could feel the anger boiling up in him at the thought, until he realized.
This boy didn't look the same. A different Link? It was the first he's seen and he had to admit, he was a bit...
Curious.]
[He appeared from the shadows, not too far from the Link, studying him for a few moments before he spoke.]
Such a look of doubt on your face. How odd for the hero.
[He jumps at the voice, sitting up and then falling back over. No, no -- the voice doesn't sound like a monster's. And if it was a monster, then...
[He sighs and sits up, looking around and finding the figure in black. A child...? No, no one here in an innocent child, no matter how young they may look.]
A look of doubt...
[He sighs again. Doubt. Yes, that's a good word for what he feels right now. He's second-guessing himself and has been ever since he spoke with the other him. No, even before that, but it took meeting his other self to realize that yes, there was another option, and it wasn't as monstrous as it could've been.]
Even heroes doubt sometimes. Some of us, at least...
[He just stares at the stranger for a long moment, trying to figure out if he's really seeing someone or if this is merely another dream. Either way, what difference does it make? No one will believe him about Koholint.]
I doubt... I made a very important decision not long ago, and now I doubt that I've made the right choice.
[ooc: It just hit me that I haven't threaded with you before, so hello~!]

[He barely registers the footsteps and the sound of motion, but that voice -- that voice slices through his mind again, and he curls up on the ground, closing his eyes and trying to keep the memories away.]
Ma-Marin, I'm sorry... I'm so, so sorry... I'm not as strong as I thought I was...
["You don't realize what kind of realm this is, do you?"
[It's not fair; how can a dream be so real? How could he have been forced to make such a choice?!]
[The hand on his shoulder makes him jump -- monster! -- but as he tries to get in position to defend himself, he just falls again, staring up at a familiar face.]
Marin...?
[It's a dream, isn't it? She's not really here... but he doesn't care. Dream, reality, he doesn't think it matters.
[He staggers up to his feet and gives her a weak smile. Yes, go inside with Marin and it can be just like it always was back on Koholint, before everything ended...] S-sure, Marin... I'd like that. Do you need help with anything?

There are no monsters here, friend.
[And there aren't. Which is unusual in itself.]
