The religion of children

Last night, the hot and humid air from our first real summery day settled down to a dead calm.  That's when the fireflies emerged, hovering and drifting just above the ground.  There were so many of them, with their shifting web of chemical glow, it looked as if the stars had fallen to Earth.  There are no words to describe it.  My daughter might ( Read more... )

This brings tears to my eyes. What beauty in your writing, in your daughter, in the gift of her. Oh, my! This is absolutely beautiful.

I would frame these words and put them up to see each day, leaving out the last sentence because what you've written is true.

My wishes are fulfilled in your words.

Thank you, Cathy. It's all about perspective, isn't it? I can't tell my daughters anything better than what they can come up with on their own!

Yes, that is why they are our teachers. We learn from them.

A beautiful Fourth of July weekend to the four of you.

Gorgeously captured, thanks so much for sharing this. We had a brilliant night of fireflies last weekend, there were so many that our fields were ablaze. No wind, no moon, just the soft, gentle undulation of their lights. Magical!

Children are indeed a blessing, their vision so much clearer than our own. What a joy!

Thanks, Eric. It was a blast from childhoods past. I feel like if everyone could see it, experience it, perhaps some of our priorities would shift. But if not, maybe it's enough to just be one of those magical summertime moments.

A magical moment, indeed. I sometimes still feel the joyous wonder of nature. It's a treat when it happens, I love it.

I have only ever seen one firefly in my life, when I visited a friend in Michigan. We don't have such wondrous things here in the desert southwest. We do have horny toads, though, which (sort of) makes up for it, I guess.

Maybe the horny toads ate all of your fireflies. :)
