Gravity vs. inertia

I needed a Jared Diamond book for a college course I'm taking this fall.  Not wanting to buy it, Emilia and I visited the local public library on Thursday afternoon.  I found Collapse right away, but Emilia needed some play time with the blocks and bean bag chairs.  While she stacked and shouted, I browsed the children's books.  Aha!  A book with ( Read more... )

I've done this very thing a number of times myself, but I don't recall having a child with me at the time that I can rely on as an excuse.

If anyone asks, there's always the possibility that the dog (or cat) ate it!

My dad made two funny mistakes when we were kids - once, he accidentally took my sister and I to work with him instead of driving us to day care. He didn't notice until he got to his school and found two half-asleep toddlers in the backseat. D'oh!

The other time, we had gotten our sneakers wet in the rain or something and had put them on the trunk of his car to dry off. He drove off, not realizing they were on the trunk - and they actually made it to work with him, all the way across town, including a long stretch on 35-W.

It's amazing what will survive that kind of trip. I got lucky with a cup of coffee once.

That's great. I'm glad you still had two out of three when you stopped to check.

I once drove a few miles down a highway with a video tape on the bumper of the truck I was driving. It was nighttime and the person behind me flashed their headlights at me, and told me about the video when I pulled over. I was really happy because it was a rented movie and I could not have afforded to replace it.

This reminds me of the snowy day we were driving home from your parents' place with the back of the pickup filled to the brim with things you had been storing at your parents' house. And then came the wind...
