Update

* I went to a "stormwater management" workshop run by the shire yesterday and learned that it's not the shire's duty to fix the roads after flash flooding, it's the landowner's duty to perform whatever earthworks are required on their property to stop run-off from damaging the road. That's definitely a new way to think about it! In some of the ( Read more... )

I know how you feel - countdown-to-Christmas feeling is something that makes me ridiculously happy every year. I literally can't wait :)

No matter how busy it is, December always feels more relaxed to me than any other time.

I'll get out those decorations you sent!

Very nice. I used to do cross-stitch, but don't seem to make the time for it any more (I expect all that time goes on the internet!).

"Someone on the workshop was wearing a "Coast to Coast" t-shirt, which I immediately asked him about. He and his wife had recently done the walk across England I'm doing next June, except they did it the hard way, camping out and carrying all their gear. They were in their 60s and were scornful about the poor preparation of many of the other walkers they met ("They were half our age and asking for our help!") Must not be one of those people..."

Ha! :) Go them!

They didn't even look particularly fit, but had done a lot of walking and an exercise program designed for people doing the Kokoda Track to get ready (though they said it was difficult to get properly ready here since we don't have any hills comparable to the ones in the Lakes District).

Hee, and now I feel guilty about opting for the cushy catered version of the walk! We talked on the phone with the trip leader last Thursday night - she assured us that B and I are likely to be the fittest of the bunch and should have no problems at all. And you and I are the youngest, unsurprisingly. (She has no doubt about you, though - "she's a runner, she'll be fine!")

The only bit I'm nervous about is the weather, and that's what makes me happy not to be camping out. I don't mind a day of hiking in the wet, but several days in a row of wet gear with no chance to dry out (which happened in New Zealand) is not my idea of fun.

They said the B&B people looked much fresher than the camping people! They did it in August and had a few days of pretty constant rain.

If you weren't the fittest of the group, I'd say the group would be much too fit for me. I'll have to do some serious preparation. I'm not much of a runner just at this very moment, though everything I said on my application was true! It would be embarrassing to be the youngest and be struggling!

They were very enthusiastic about the different beers and cheeses available in the various towns. I'm more of a chocolate and baked goods person myself, but you might enjoy them!

I like beer AND cheese AND chocolate AND baked goods!

...this is why I exercise so much.

You inspired me to put on my running shoes and go for a morning run before any more time went by! I should pick a road race for early next year to train for to keep me honest.

There was an amazing full moon on a stormy night on Wednesday

That sounds amazing. (Soon I'll be in Aus and will get to see summer storms!)

I know what you mean about being in a good mood this time of the year. That's totally me too. :D
