Update

* I went to a "stormwater management" workshop run by the shire yesterday and learned that it's not the shire's duty to fix the roads after flash flooding, it's the landowner's duty to perform whatever earthworks are required on their property to stop run-off from damaging the road. That's definitely a new way to think about it! In some of the ( Read more... )

Hee, and now I feel guilty about opting for the cushy catered version of the walk! We talked on the phone with the trip leader last Thursday night - she assured us that B and I are likely to be the fittest of the bunch and should have no problems at all. And you and I are the youngest, unsurprisingly. (She has no doubt about you, though - "she's a runner, she'll be fine!")

The only bit I'm nervous about is the weather, and that's what makes me happy not to be camping out. I don't mind a day of hiking in the wet, but several days in a row of wet gear with no chance to dry out (which happened in New Zealand) is not my idea of fun.

They said the B&B people looked much fresher than the camping people! They did it in August and had a few days of pretty constant rain.

If you weren't the fittest of the group, I'd say the group would be much too fit for me. I'll have to do some serious preparation. I'm not much of a runner just at this very moment, though everything I said on my application was true! It would be embarrassing to be the youngest and be struggling!

They were very enthusiastic about the different beers and cheeses available in the various towns. I'm more of a chocolate and baked goods person myself, but you might enjoy them!

I like beer AND cheese AND chocolate AND baked goods!

...this is why I exercise so much.

You inspired me to put on my running shoes and go for a morning run before any more time went by! I should pick a road race for early next year to train for to keep me honest.

*waves pom-poms*

Although now I have to admit that I haven't run much at all lately; the GC trip was three weeks of other exercise, yes, but no running, and then I had a few days here (I ran!) before visiting my parents (I didn't run much there), and then I got sick and I just today (Monday) actually walked outside the house for the first time since Thursday.

I have no races scheduled at all! I need to pick one and start training again.

Fingers crossed neither of us come down with anything like that right before or during the trip! I suppose it'd be possible to lay up somewhere and meet up with the group later.

I found myself near an outdoor goods store having a sale today and bought hiking poles. Now I just have to get familiar with using them!
