Bookish news...

So, today, my company, the Harry W. Schwartz Bookshops, announces that they're closing all the doors at the end of March. There'd been whispers and rumors and whatnot for a while, but we, the employees, just found out last night, and the public was made aware today...

While this IS a bit worrisome, in a "personal employment" sense, it's not THAT ( Read more... )

I am sorry to hear of the store's closing. I adore quaint, local bookshops.
I hope you find a job which you like, and is good for you.

I'm so sorry about this. I know you were good at that job.

I've been moving, more and more, to buying only from my local independent. I've been caught in a few situations where I couldn't, but for the most part they are my go-to store now. I don't know that it'll ever be enough, but I want them here, because they are staffed by smart, well-read people like you who always steer me in the right direction.

Oh man. First, I'm sorry. Second, this makes me nervous for my own local shop. Third, I'm right there with you. I mean, we switched the foundation of our economy from farming and manufacturing to flat-out mass consumption. And now the economy sucks and everyone has a flat screen television anyway... so, uh, how do we Indiana Jones our way out of this one?

I want to applaud for this. So well written and such good points.

I think you've identified the crux of a really symbolic question (symbolic - or maybe symptomatic - of a much bigger question): Given the expansion of our energy into what's essentially a virtual global community and economy (facilitated by things such as the internet) - how do we best care for our immediate corporeal surroundings - our bodies, our communities, our economies?

That's a huge question and I'm not sure I phrased it very well. But it seems like one worth pondering!

Regardless, I'm still very sorry about Schwartz!! I mourn it with you.

First, sorry about your job. If I were you, I'd start thumping out there right away for another one, despite your good resume because...

Tough times are ahead for the economy, so there will be a lot of good resumes circulating soon enough. I keep hearing of layoffs from a lot of Americans I know. Worrisome times indeed.
