I'm so used to the idea of Russia being part of the Allies, as in the board game and the later part of the real war, that I'd forgotten about Germany and Russia splitting Poland between them. I had to double check what brought Russia into the war on the Allies' side. It seems the Axis leaders really were their own worst enemies - Germany attacked Russia, and Japan attacked the US, both in the same year, both bringing extremely major neutral and/or isolationist powers into the war as enemies.
