~It's always blah blah blah blah

Feb 15, 2014 21:07

Man I tried SO HARD to get this finished on Valentine's Day but I couldn't quite make it (that's where I've been the last week or so if you were curious). BUT I DID IT, IT IS DONE!!! I FINISHED THE VIDEO, HA HA!!

I put it up on Newgrounds but I changed the audio quality after putting it up and have tried in vain to get the video there to reflect the changes, so you can also watch it on my domain instead where the audio is correct! Like with I've Learned Too Much, I ran into the thing where the song drifted off-time near the end, so the audio quality is lower than normal to try and keep things in sync.

I also put it on Youtube!

The flash version has some little extras (the little preloader/ending chibis where Scri insults you/me, haha), but the youtube version is probably the closest to being on-time (although it's still just sliiightly off and youtube murdered the visual quality). You have no idea how frustrating it is to have something completely on time in Flash that goes way off when exported. SO FRUSTRATING.

Also you can pause the youtube one and rewatch bits if you want which may come in handy since at some points the text goes by very quickly, haha.

BUT HEY I BET YOU DIDN'T EXPECT A VID ABOUT THESE TWO haha it must seem very random, especially if you don't actually know anything about them. I picked up Okochama Sensou a while ago but never really checked out a translation until Moro pointed one out to me, and then I was like omg, this would be perfect for them wouldn't it? And she said YES DO IT DO IT DO IT
AND SO HERE WE ARE NOW haha.

This video should still be accessible even if you don't know anything about the two of them, but if you do then hopefully you will also enjoy it on a bunch of levels as I do, haha. I seriously can't get over how well it works.

I mixed and matched from the two translations depending on what I thought matched up with them more, but presumably it should be accurate? If it isn't I can go back and fix it, it's not a huge deal. There were two bits that were a bit puzzling to me. One is "a candy and a candy to show my brotherly dignity" which I'm still not entirely sure what that means, so I just interpreted it fairly directly, but in the other translation it was something about a sweet disposition, and maybe it's some sort of idiom or something I'm not getting? EITHER WAY whatever, it works. The other one is near the end, the "I'll humbly receive, from 1 to 100" which doesn't flow too well into the next line but I have no idea there and there wasn't any animation specifically referencing that anyway, so whatevs.

ANYWAY while Edgar and Scriabin's relationship isn't as simple as being brothers, they do pretend to be brothers sometimes for really messed up/codependent reasons so it works, haha. Brothers, sort of. CLOSE ENOUGH FOR THESE PURPOSES.

Even the beginning really amuses me with "once upon a time, a very long time ago" since god knows I started Vargas like ten years ago and it will probably haunt me until I die at this rate.

Scri's voice is a bit higher than I would've liked, but it was surprisingly hard to find a version of this song that was done by two guys. Most of the time it's a dude and a lady as with the original. :B I was tempted to do Akio's version since that has them both in the same range, but I really liked the little laugh in Uratanuki's version and went with that one in the end (fun trivia: I thought up until right before I uploaded this that it was Uratameki, because I'm an idiot. I only caught it was Uratanuki at the last second). I did swap one line though, the "you get a gold star for all your hard work!" line, which is great and hilarious in the Uratanuki version but doesn't really match Edgar very well at all, so I swapped it out with Akio's since it was a bit more lowkey.

Edgar's voice matches pretty well in my head, just sort of quiet. :B I especially love how it sounds in the bridge during the whole "you are the only rival I could ever have" part.

Scri being an enormous attention whore tended to have the most elaborate animation and such, which was a huge pain because I had to set up a bunch of separate layers for his body and his coat and his hair and keep them all coordinated and it's like UGGH. If you watch you can see the straps of his belt shifting around when he moves at times cause pointless details.
Edgar on the other hand was a bit simpler, but he does have the scars beneath his eyes which changed depending on whether or not they were under his glasses, which was sort of annoying to keep track of, but eh.

I'm amused that Scri is the one who pulls and pushes and shoves and at one point tries to punch Edgar and still Edgar ends up giving him a candy when he wants one, the big doormat. THAT ABOUT SUMS THEM UP.

The loading dancing chibis were really hard to time in the file itself, I did a lot of fiddling to try and get it right and of course in like all the exported versions they don't quite line up ARRRGH. Scri's hands bop on a different beat than Edgar's swaying though, so they're both sort of doing their own thing.

The swoop around Scri did not look at all as it did in my head during his chorus but whatever I GAVE IT A SHOT.

I'm also amused by the fast ranting part how they're both not even really listening to each other, they're just talking at each other, which also fits, haha.

Edgar's subconscious has always been a white void whenever it's shown up in stories and the like, thus like 90% of the time whenever Scri shows up and Edgar interacts with him in his subconscious, they're in a white void. WHICH IS A REALLY CONVENIENT EXCUSE TO NOT DO A BACKGROUND I KNOW but whatever, it works.

I finished all the animation and was about 2/3rds of the way into coloring it when I finally just got a new tablet because the old one was becoming impossible to work with, but it has trouble registering line pressure in Flash it seems, which was sort of annoying. It's most noticable on the lines in the ending chibis, where the first chibi you see was done with my old tablet, and the rest are done with the new one. But eh, it works, that's the important part.

I think my absolute favorite thing about this is "Tonight, like every night with you, it's blah blah blah blah" because THAT'S IT, THAT'S THEIR RELATIONSHIP IN A NUTSHELL. JUST ENDLESS WALLS OF TEXT, YELLING AT EACH OTHER FOR HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS
I've also seen "blah blah blah" done as "hey hey hey" but blah blah blah was way too perfect, I absolutely had to use blah blah blah.

I also really love Scri's indignant squawk at the end for the "EEEH??" part, it's so perfect. I didn't even notice it until I was doing the animation for that part.

I CAN'T THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE RIGHT NOW I'll probably do a more detailed post tomorrow or something, haha.
