And this would be the drabbles part of Drafts and Drabble Night (which is about to be over, by the by. I'm running out of steam, and I've gotta go to work tomorrow.)
Title: Don't Poke the Alligator with a Stick
Word Count: 159
Rating: G
Disclaimer PostSummary: It's not that Charlie doesn't know that the world is dangerous, he just doesn't usually get a practical demonstration of that concept.
Notes: This one is episode-related, for Rampage season 2, episode 21. I don't think you have to have seen the episode to read the fic, but it does help. The title is also from a quote of Alan's in that episode. What else? Oh, I wrote this on the fly after watching the episode and I seem to remember three shots being fired before Don pushes Charlie down, but I could be wrong. And I'll shut up before the notes become longer than the drabble.
One shot. Charlie registers the sound, but not the danger it represents.
Two shots. The glass wall shatters not ten feet away from where he and Don are standing. Charlie turns to look. Don tenses beside him.
Three shots. Charlie’s whiteboard now has a hole-a bullet hole-in it. Charlie flinches. Don moves. All of a sudden, Charlie’s on the ground with his brother crouched over him, yelling at him, stay down audible even over the sudden chaos. Don’s hand brushes against Charlie’s back as he reaches for his gun.
Charlie doesn’t need anyone to tell him that the world isn’t safe. He was a child math prodigy in the public school system, he’s always known that people can be dangerous. But Don is here, and Don is safety-always has been, always will be. Don will protect him.
Charlie silently repeats that over and over until his hands stop shaking, long after the last bullet is fired.
