IIRC, the "Crossplane I-4" is new for 2009 in the R1. It's an inline 4 engine that has the crank throws 90 degrees out from each other. Uneven firing, and supposedly better power delivery and traction control. I'm not sure it makes any difference for the mortal street rider.

There's a bit on Yamaha's website about it, in the section about the 2009 R1.

And what is it with ASS UGLY headlights on motorcycles these days???

I know. The M1100 one really just has me. I think they forgot about it til the last few months of design and in a attempt to make it look stylish' they put an avant garde headlight on there.

Ah, I hadn't read up on the new R1 - that is all news to me. I did take a few pics.

The new R1 is interesting, with all it's MotoGP derived technology and other craziness. I think it looks kind of ugly. I don't like the looks of the new SV650 either. The KTM's look like the Best of Show. The motorcycle convention is coming to Long Beach on December 5. I'm looking forward to it!

Hell ya, are they doing demo rides there? Maybe they will have different bikes to demo at each show. I doubt it but I really wanted to try the M1100

I'll provide a full report after I go. The M1100 looks so good! I love naked bikes, but I'm really enjoying the luxury of the double-bubble and full fairings on the ZZR. Call me a wimp, if you will!
