Hm, don't know if this helps, but u can never be paired with y, ä or ö in a word that's not a compound word. E and i play with everyone, a, o and u / ä, ö and y only like each other (and e+i).

Likewise, you can pair up the vowels: a+ä, o+ö, u+y.

Oh, vowel harmony! I know about that! It's the pronunciation that gets me. I can never remember which one make which sound because they all sound the same to me.

I still have problems with ö, can't quite get the hang of that one.

Argh, u and y. I have problems with it too. 8| Like, I usually remember what y sounds like, but I have trouble remembering u, except that "it sounds different than y". Sometimes it helps if I remember how it sounded when a friend of mine tried to pronounce "Yuu" with Finnish pronunciation in a recording, buuuut usually I forget it.
