For once, the shouting that was bouncing off the wall was not directed at him. The words were laced with anger and hurt, but he wasn’t the one in the middle of the firing line this time. For the first time in what felt like forever, his face wasn’t the one bleeding.

Jaejoong snapped out of his thoughts just in time to stop the man from delivering yet another punch to his cowering husband. He had never seen Yunho so scared before, and it pulled on his already torn heartstrings.

“Stop! What are you doing?! Stop it!” Jaejoong yelled as he crouched down and cupped his husbands face in his hands. Yunho was on the brink of tears, his entire frame was shaking. It was such a familiar sight. Jaejoong could see himself in his husband’s eyes. The fear and hurt was so evident on his face.

“Is this why you never bring him to office parties and gatherings, Yunho? Well, is it?! You’re sick, you know that? Sick!”

Jaejoong assumed the man was Yunho’s colleague, possibly a friend.

“Don’t talk to him like that! You have no right!”

The man looked at Jaejoong and offered him his hand, “I think you should go to the hospital, your nose looks broken. Come on, I promise he won’t follow. You’re safe now.”

For a second, he considered taking him up on the offer, but his opinion turned on a single word. ‘Safe.’ What did he mean by that? Hadn’t Yunho always protected him from things that weren’t safe?

Yunho scrambled to his feet, and for once he didn’t object when Jaejoong helped him. He didn’t swat away the hand on the back of his neck that was drawing soothing circles on the bruised skin. He felt him shiver under his gentle touch, like he was expecting the small hand to wrap around his neck. Without saying a word, he walked out of the bathroom, making no attempt to drag Jaejoong with him.

“You’re Jaejoong, right? I’m Shim Changmin. Yunho and I work together. I thought we were friends, too, but.. it doesn’t seem like I know him as well as I thought I did,” the taller man said, scratching the back of his head. “He talks about you sometimes, you know,” he continued, “but only of his own accord. He never answers if anyone asks about you.”

Jaejoong walked past Changmin and said, “I’m going home. I don’t need your help, and if you ever lay a hand on my husband again, it’ll be the last thing you do.”

Perhaps he was defending Yunho the way he wished his husband would defend him, too. Regardless, he just wanted to get home, even though he knew hell awaited him. There was no telling what Yunho would do to him once he got home, surely he would be blamed for this, but it was a risk he was willing to take. As usual.

Back at the house, all the lights had been turned off, and Yunho could be heard whispering to himself underneath the covers on their bed. His arms wrapped around his shaking body as he repeated the words Changmin had shouted at him. “What’s wrong with you, what’s wrong with you, what’s wrong with you.” In that moment, it was as if it was his father speaking to him again. The words left him paralyzed, unable to fight back when Changmin’s hand balled up into a fist.

Yunho covered his ears with his hands when his father voice refused to leave his head. The voice was resonating in his mind, bouncing around inside his skull until cracks started to form.

“You’re right. There is something wrong with me,” he whispered as he lay in complete darkness. He didn’t know if Jaejoong would come home, but he knew that if he did, he would surely hurt him again. He needed an outlet for the pain that was incased in his cast iron heart and he couldn’t stop himself from taking it out on the only person who had ever loved him.

“What’s wrong with you,” he whispered once again before the pain and guilt knocked him unconscious.
