Instead of waking up to birds singing, Jaejoong woke up to Changmin’s long string of curse words.  Even though his eyes were still heavy with sleep, he managed to locate his cellphone underneath his pillow to check what time it was.  It was just after 7:30, and he could only assume his best friend had woken up when his father left for work.

“Changmin?”

“What?”

“Go back to sleep.”

Changmin threw his pillow across the room. “I can’t. I’m wide awake now. ”

“That’s not my fault, so let me sleep.”

“Do you have any chocolate bars left at least?”

“No.”

The blonde closed his eyes, ignoring the taller boy’s whining. “Go watch cartoons. Watch Bob the Builder or something.”

“Can Bob the Builder fix my broken heart?”

After realizing his sleep had been cut horrendously short, Jaejoong got out of bed and got dressed. He noticed a little note on the kitchen counter when he trudged into the kitchen wearing his bunny slippers, a sleepy Changmin trailing behind.

Jaejoong.

I forgot that I have a faculty meeting at 5, so I won’t be home until 7:30. There’s some money on the counter for lunch and dinner. Eat something healthy! No more junk food, capisce?

Lock the door before you leave.

Come straight home after school.

I love you.

- Dad

The teenager rolled his eyes and tore the note apart. “So much for spending quality time together.”

Changmin bit his lower lip, wondering whether or not he should ask if his best friend was okay. Before he could decide, Jaejoong turned around and smiled. “We have time to go out for breakfast before school.”

“Uh, yeah.”

“Let’s go.”

After a breakfast consisting only of coffee and cake, the duo made their way to school, snorting in disgust as Park Yoochun’s car pulled up next to them.

“Hey, Jung. Looking good with that hair color. I always knew you were a blonde at heart.”

With his backpack in a death grip, Jaejoong sped up, hoping the older student would leave him alone.

Yoochun smiled at Changmin as the taller man glanced over his shoulder.  He flipped him off, and ran after Jaejoong.

“Hey, Jae! Wait up.”

“Let x be the walking speed. 3x will be the running speed. 2*(x) will be the distance walked and 1*(3x) will be the distance run. Total distance is 20 km. Hence-why do I hear people talking?”

“Because you have ears, Jung-Songsaengnim.”

The students’ muffled laughs didn’t go unnoticed.

“You should remember that line when you call your parents by the end of the day and tell them why you won’t be coming home for dinner. I’ll see you in detention.”

“What?! That’s unfair!”

Yunho sighed and crossed his arms. “You know what’s unfair? The fact that I devoted my life to helping young people build a foundation for their future, and they don’t even have the respect nor the decency to listen to me for one and half our every day. That’s unfair.”

The young boy gritted his teeth, staring intensely at his teacher as if he thought he could scare him. On the contrary though, Yunho stared right back at him, and his stare was 10 times more intimidating. The student looked down. “I’m sorry.”

“Thank you.”

When it was time for lunch, Yunho couldn’t be happier. He had 30 minutes to himself, and he desperately needed that. Just as he walked past one of his colleagues’ office, he thought he could hear his son’s name being mentioned.

“Poor boy. I heard his mother moved abroad with her lover.”

“Really? Hm, I wouldn’t be surprised. Yunho never talks about his family, but I guess no one wants to talk about how they can’t keep their family together.”

“Exactly. I also heard that his son was suspended for smoking on school premises.”

“Scandalous if you ask me.”

Yunho clenched his fists, wanting nothing more than to kick down the door and tell them…. tell them what exactly? That they were right? That he knew his wife was cheating on him? That he knew his son did things he didn’t approve of? Maybe his family was broken. Maybe he was broken. It certainly wasn’t Jaejoong’s fault. No, no matter what, his son was the only thing that was right in all that was wrong. His heart would swell in his chest every time he thought about his son. Yes, he was a bit rebellious, but he was a 15 year old boy for Christ’s sake.

Forgetting about eating, he fished his phone out of his pocket and called his son as he was walking to his office.

“Hello?”

“Hi!”

He could hear Jaejoong chuckling, and it was like music to his tired ears. “What’s up?”

“Hm, nothing really. Just wanted to check up on you. That’s all.”

“I’m fine, dad. I’m at the library with Changmin, so can I call you back later?”

Yunho smiled. As if his son willingly went to the library.

“Yeah.. yes, of course you can.”

“Are you okay?”

Yunho closed the door to his office, leaning against it with eyes closed. “Jae.. do you think I’m a bad father?”

Jaejoong went quiet for a few seconds, and Yunho could only imagine the thoughts that were racing through the boy’s head.

“Why would you ask that?”

“Because other people might think so.”

“Okay, you’re not making any sense. Can we talk about this when you come home?”

“Sure.”

“I have to go. I love you.”

Those three words had never meant as much to him as they did at that point. All he needed to feel better was to hear those three words. From his son.

“I love you, too.”

Yunho decided to drop the faculty meeting, claiming he felt sick, and headed straight home the second he got off work. The words kept replaying in his head.

“I guess no one wants to talk about how they can’t keep their family together.”

“Scandalous if you ask me.”

He was home before he knew it. His mind had been taunting him the whole day, and he couldn’t wait to just lie down on the couch an take a nap.

He opened the door, smiling when his eyes fell to the boy sitting on the couch watching cartoons. It reminded him of when Jaejoong was a child. He’d wake his father up terribly early every Saturday so that they could watch cartoons together. Yunho would make them both a bowl of cereal, and they’d just sit together and watch cartoons and play video games all day long. He really missed that. For some reason, all the good memories he had with his son didn’t include his mother. None of the good family memories he had included her. It was just the two of them.

Jaejoong turned around at the sound of the door closing. “You’re home early. The meeting-”

“I’m not feeling well, so I decided to skip it.”

“Oh… do you want something? Tea or?”

Yunho smiled. “No. But if you don’t mind, I’d like to watch TV with you.”

“Of course.” The teen patted the empty space next to him. “Sit down, old man.”

“Watch it.”

For about 5 minutes, they sat together in silence. The atmosphere was thick and tense. Jaejoong broke the silence, his voice timidly low.

“You’re a great father.”

“You’re a great son.”

Jaejoong laughed, covering his face with his hands. “This is awkward.”

“I know.”

Yunho placed his hand on his son’s knee. “You know I’m incredibly proud of you, right? I might not be the best at showing it, but you really are my pride and joy. I know I yell a lot… but I wouldn’t if I didn’t care about you.”

“Mom doesn’t yell at me.”

As if someone had driven a wooden stake through Yunho’s heart, he wanted to hunch over in pain.

“Jae…”

“She doesn’t love you.”

“Jaejoong, that’s enough.”

“God, how stupid can you be?!”

The teenager swatted his father’s hand away. “She’s this close to leaving us, you know that. Leave her before she does.”

“It’s complicated.”

“Why? Can you honestly say that you love her?”

“What would you know about love, Jaejoong? You’re a teenager.”

“I know that love can turn a mad man sane, and a sane man mad.”

Yunho buried his face in his hands.  “What am I then?”

“Unhappy.”

Jaejoong took his father’s hands into his own, his thumb dancing across the older man's rough yet soft skin. “You deserve better. I admit I’m not the best, nor the most patient son… but I know you deserve better than this. When she comes home.. tell her the truth.”

“I can’t..”

“Yes, you can. It’s time you stop sacrificing your own happiness for someone who’s not even worth it.”

“She’s your mother, Jae.”

“You’re my father, and I love you more than I love her. I don’t even know if I love her, but I know that you don’t.”

The older man smiled, tears threating to escape from the corners of his eyes. “Since when did you become so mature?”

“Since Changmin made me watch all those dramas with him.”

Yunho looked into his son’s eyes. “Thank you.”

The smaller boy wrapped his tiny arms around his neck. “You’re welcome.”

It was strange, Yunho concluded. Yes, it was strange… every time Jaejoong hugged him… every time Jaejoong told him he loved him… it felt like he was losing bits and pieces of his sanity. It felt like he was going mad. But you know what? It felt good.
