“He sees you when you're sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good-“
“So call the cops for goodness sake!”
“Changmin!”
“It’s not my fault every song makes Santa sound like a stalker.”
Jaejoong rolled his eyes at the younger boy’s obvious lack of Christmas spirit. The lead singer started humming a jolly tune that was soon to be interrupted by the disapproving sounds coming from the bundle of “joy” sitting on the couch.
“Do you want to help me decorate the tree?”
Changmin stared blankly at the TV, ignoring the lead singer’s attempt to include him. It was the first Christmas all five of them celebrated together, and Jaejoong wanted everything to be perfect. Changmin always seemed excited about going home to celebrate Christmas with his family, so the brown-haired beauty started questioning whether or not they were the reason for the taller man’s bad mood.
He put down the glittery decorations and sat down next to the younger boy. “Are you homesick?”
“No.”
“Are you hungry?”
Changmin released a breath he didn’t even know he was holding. “No, I’m not. Look, just leave me alone, okay? Is that really too much to ask for?”
“But it’s Christmas…”
“It’s a day filled with nothing but disappointments for some.”
Jaejoong awkwardly cleared his throat, hoping that the rest of the members would just come barging through the door any minute. Which they did.
“Really, Junsu? A candle? You’re so cheap; you buy your mother a candle?”
“It smells like strawberry and she likes that! She wanted something simple. What did you buy for your mom, Yoochun? Weed?”
Jaejoong smiled and got up, patting the younger on the back. Changmin tried to avoid his touch like it was acid, shrugging off his touch and scooting away from him. He didn’t say anything, but Jaejoong eyes started sparkling with something other than Christmas joy.
“Hey, guys!” Yoochun happily greeted, sauntering into the living room while Junsu had been left behind in the hallway to carry all the bags.
“Uhm, where’s Yunho?” Jaejoong asked, making his way to the kitchen.
“He said there was something he needed to do, but he’ll be back for when we start opening gifts. Hey, can I decorate the tree?”
“Sure, you and Junsu can do that.”
Changmin quietly got up and bumped into Yoochun as he walked past him like he couldn’t even see him.
“I’m gonna take a shower.”
He disappeared into the bathroom, leaving the other three speechless.
“What’s up with him?”
“Don’t ask me. I actually don’t know. Maybe he didn’t get much sleep last night.”
Yoochun nodded, picking up the shiny glass star from one of the many boxes of Christmas decorations.
“Junsu? Wanna put the star on top of the tree?”
Jaejoong forced himself to smile. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the youngest was terrible depressed, and the worst part was that he wasn’t the one who could make him feel better.
2 hours later, the kitchen was filled with the smell of Christmas dinner. Junsu and Yoochun were waiting for the rest of the members to join them in the living room so that they could open the gifts together before dinner.
Changmin could hear how excited they all were as he listened to their voices from inside the bathroom. He kept asking himself whether or not he should just stay in the bathroom till morning since he was making everyone miserable anyway. At least that’s what he thought.
He kicked the door, leaning his back against it. For a second, he closed his eyes and wished that when he opened them, Yunho would be there, with him.
“What’s the point in wishing for anything anyway…”
It wasn’t like he hated Christmas. It was quite the opposite. He loved Christmas, and everything that came with it. Up until he turned 11. Every year, Santa gave him exactly what he wanted, and every year, Santa ate the cookies he put out, and drank the milk. Every year.
Except from the year when he turned 11. He wished for a train set, one with black, shiny locomotives, goods wagons, a brake van and a small oval of track. He would be the first one in his entire school to get one, and he couldn't wait to play with it and share it with his friends.
He never understood why his parents sat down with him the night before Christmas and told him that Santa was incredibly busy that year, and that there were kids less fortunate than him that wanted the same train set. They told him that Santa couldn't give him the train set… or any gifts at all that year.
The truth was that Changmin’s father had been fired, and they barely had enough money to put food on the table. The train set was expensive, as did everything else seem when they didn’t have enough money. His job didn’t pay all that to begin with, but the young couple saved up money from the beginning of the year till the end to make sure they could buy their son a nice gift. Several families struggled that year to make ends meet.
To Changmin, believing in Santa Claus wasn’t just about the gifts. He knew there were kids less fortunate than him that probably wanted toys more… but one thing he didn’t understand was why his best friend didn’t get any gifts that year either. Changmin’s best friend lived alone with his mother who was unemployed too at the moment, and couldn’t afford to get her son anything for Christmas. They lived in a tiny apartment, and Changmin didn’t understand why he, of all children, didn’t receive a gift.
“Believing in Santa Claus means more than just receiving gifts. It gives you hope. Hope that no matter how miserable the world seems… there’s at least one person out there that cares about you.”
Changmin smiled upon remembering his friend’s sincere words. He’d lost all faith in Christmas that year, all faith in Santa. He stopped believing he was real, and he started becoming more critical to everything, something he’d carried with him into adulthood.
No matter how jolly people were, no matter how many gifts he got, he knew there were children out there that would go through the same thing he went through as a child. Children who perhaps never even got the chance to celebrate Christmas. Children who perhaps had nothing to celebrate, or no one to celebrate it with.
“Changmin? Are you okay?”
The young boy quickly wiped away the few tears that had trickled down his handsome face upon hearing the sound of Yunho’s voice.
“I’m fine,” he whispered, running his fingers through his long black hair.
“Okay.. well, we’re opening gifts now. Come join us.”
He unlocked the door, only to find himself with a Yunho wrapped around his slim body. “Hello to you, too,” Changmin said with a smile.
The leader pulled back, his eyes never leaving Changmin’s tired ones. “You’ve been crying.”
“No, I’m just tired.”
“Are you su-”
“I’m sure. Where were you anyway?” he asked, taking Yunho’s hand in his, staring at the promise ring he bought him a few months ago.
“I had one more gift to buy, that’s all.”
Yunho wrapped his arms around the slightly taller man’s shoulders, looking lovingly into his eyes. “Why? Did you miss me?”
“As if.”
He pushed the other into the bathroom, pressing him firmly up against the wall. “I’ll take that as a yes,” Yunho whispered before he claimed the younger’s lips in a searing kiss, hands moving downwards as Changmin’s arms encircled the leader’s surprisingly tiny waist.
Yunho pushed his body impossibly closer, moaning as the black-haired boy’s leg slipped in between his legs.
Changmin kissed a trail from the side of the leader’s face to his Adam's apple, smirking at the needy sounds escaping from his boyfriend’s perfect lips.
“Yah! There are two rather excited boys in the living room!” Jaejoong scolded upon seeing them. “Do you plan on letting them wait forever?”
“There are two rather excited boys in here, too,” Yunho replied with a smirk as he untangled himself from the younger boy.
“Alright, we’re coming, just give us one sec.”
Jaejoong mumbled something in Satoori before he left the two alone.
“You.. you go, I’m tired, so I think I’ll go to bed.”
“What? No, come on. You have gifts to open. Aren’t you excited to see what Junsu bought for you? His gifts are… always rather surprising. 10 bucks says Junsu bought me insoles. ”
“As if it doesn’t already look like you’re walking on Mount Everest.”
“Adorable. Now, let’s open gifts, my honey funny bunny!” the leader said, trying to lift the other’s spirits.
“Fine… but can we please go to bed early?”
“Of course.”
Yunho gave Changmin a kiss before he wrapped an arm around his waist and led him into the living room where Yoochun was already busy unwrapping his gift from Junsu.
Changmin sat down on the couch, trying not to act uncomfortable as he was squeezed in between Junsu and Jaejoong. Yunho sat on Changmin’s lap, playing with his fingers as he watched Yoochun unwrap his gift.
Yoochun looked at the members before he pulled out an old sock from the box given by the dolphin crossbreed.
“Master has given Dobby a sock.”
“No, you idiot. It’s what I used to wrap the gift in. I didn’t find anything else.”
“A newspaper wasn’t classy enough?”
“No. It’s not like I wanted you to open the box only to be met by “man stabbed to death while walking his dog in the park” or something like that.”
Yoochun smiled, rummaging through the box to find the gift. He smiled as his hand made contact with something cold and smooth. He pulled out a glass angel, the kind he had been collecting ever since his father died.
“Wow.. thank you so much. I love it. Thank you.”
Hugs were given and received and so were gifts. Changmin let Yunho open all his gifts until there were only two left. One from Yunho, and one from Santa.
“It’s for you, Changmin. From Santa.”
“Oh, come on. How old am I? 5?”
The leader smiled, kissing the younger’s forehead before handing him the present. “Open it, sweetie.”
“Fine, fine.”
Everyone’s eyes were on him, as none of them knew who the gift was really from.
Changmin suddenly went stiff as the last piece of paper fell from the big box he’d received. It was a train set, the exact one he wished for when he was 11. He didn’t even know they still made them.
“Whoa, that’s so cool!” Junsu screeched.
“I…” Changmin looked at Yunho. “You… how did you know?”
“Know what?”
“That I’ve always wanted this.”
Yunho chuckled, “baby, that gift isn’t from he. I thought it was from Jaejoong.”
The lead singer shook his head, as did the rest of the members.
“Oh come on, one of you bought me this… right?”
Changmin’s eyes were brimming with tears, his heart swelling in his chest.” Thank you…”
Yunho ran his fingers through his chestnut hair before reaching into his pocket and pulling out an envelope. “You said you didn’t want anything this year. So let’s give something to someone else.”
The youngest frowned, but accepted the envelope anyway.
“It’s a donation made in your name. To the local toy store. ”
“Toy store?”
“Yes. This way, they can give gifts to the less fortunate, to the kids who might not have any gifts. Every child should open at least one give on Christmas Eve.”
“Yunho…” Changmin smiled for the first time that night as he practically threw himself at the older man, hugging him like his life depended on it. Or his faith.
“Uhm, hello?” Junsu squeaked, being trapped in between the two.
“Thank you so much, this means more to me than you’ll ever know. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Yunho cupped the younger’s face, kissing him passionately. “Merry Christmas.”
After all the gifts were unwrapped, they sat down and had dinner, the young couple’s fingers entwined under the table. Changmin couldn’t stop smiling and making jokes. He complimented Jaejoong’s food, and made fun of whatever Junsu did or said, like always.
Yunho smiled seeing his beloved acting like one should act during Christmas. Like one should feel. Happy. Loved. Not alone.
At 1am, they were all tired and some possibly drunk.
“Night to y’all dudes and guys,” Yoochun drunkenly announced as Junsu and Jaejoong helped him get into bed.
“Tired?”
Changmin yawned cutely. “Yes. Let’s go to bed.”
“Don’t you want to play with your train set?”
“I want you to help me set it up in the morning. For now... just looking at the box makes me smile.”
“Okay. Come on, let’s go to sleep.”
They held hands and walked past the trio struggling to even understand each other.
“Whose room is this?!”
“It’s your room, Yoochun.”
“Oh… then throw me into it!!”
"You are in it."
Yunho patted Junsu on the back and whispered goodnight.
Once in their shared bedroom, they stripped down to their boxers and dove underneath the comforters. Yunho nuzzled his face into the crook of the younger’s neck, breathing hot air down his naked chest. “Did you have a good Christmas?”
“I know it was you.”
“What?”
“The gift. I know it was from you. I don’t know how you knew though… ”
Yunho sat up, pulling Changmin with him. “Why can’t you just believe it was from Santa?”
“Yunho.”
“Fine, fine. I confess.”
“How did you know.. and where did you find it?”
Yunho smiled, stroking the raven’s smooth hair. “The owner of the toy store had one. He didn’t want to sell it as they don’t make them anymore, but I convinced him.”
“How did you know I wanted it?”
“Christmas magic.”
“Tell me.”
“No.”
Changmin smirked and started tickling the elder, fully aware of how much he hated it. He straddled the leader, his hands pressed firmly against the other’s chest. “Tell me.”
“Christmas magic. You just have to believe it.”
“I have a feeling you’re trying to teach me something here again.”
“Maybe, maybe not. Either way, that’s the truth. Now let’s sleep.”
“I didn’t get to give you my gift though.”
“That’s okay, I don’t need anything.”
Changmin smirked. “Either way, I couldn’t give it to you with everyone else present.”
“…. What is it?”
He leaned closer, blowing hot air across the elder’s face. Yunho closed his eyes, fingers digging into Changmin’s waist, leaving marks on his heated skin.
“You said you didn’t want anything this year.”
“I-I did,” the leader breathed out.
“How about I give you something I want?”
“What? How does that work?”
“It would be a nice change if I got to fuck you for once.”
Yunho’s eyes shot open. “We-we’ve tried that before.”
“Once. In your car. It’ll be different this time. Better.”
The leader bit his lower lip nervously. “Well, if that’s what you want.”
Changmin kissed him gently. It was one of those kisses that made your head spin and your heart race.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
They wrapped their arms around each other, feeling how their hearts were beating in unison.
“Believing in Santa Claus means more than just receiving gifts. It gives you hope. Hope that no matter how miserable the world seems… there’s at least one person out there that cares about you.”
Santa existed. Changmin knew that now. Santa Claus existed in people. In his parents, in Yunho… maybe even in him.
