Chapter 8

Yunho woke up to the sound of heavy rain abusing the windows. He yawned and touched the other side of the bed, only to find it empty and cold.

“Jaejoong?” he called out, thinking his lover was in the bathroom.

When no answer could be heard, he got out of bed, and slowly opened the door to the guest room.

“No..”

Jaejoong’s clothes were gone, as well as his scent. There was nothing left to indicate Jaejoong had stayed there for the past few weeks.

Yunho called his friends, and asked if they had by any chance seen Jaejoong, or if he had contacted them. Upon hearing ‘no’ from everyone, he collapsed in the middle of the living room and hugged his knees to his chest.

“I knew it,” he cried. “I knew this would happen…”

“Please don’t leave me.. ever...”

“I-I won’t..  I promise.”

Yunho let out a heart wrenching scream and unknown to him, Jaejoong could hear him. The raindrops falling on to the doctor’s body as he ran outside and searched for his love, were Jaejoong’s tears.

The angel watched from above as Yunho desperately searched for him. “M-Make it stop, Yoochun..” he whispered as he covered his heart with his hand, hoping it would make the pain go away.

“I can’t, Jaejoong. I can’t make it go away.”

As the angels cried for them, Jaejoong’s wings slowly wrapped themselves around him, only this time, they couldn’t protect him, since the pain came from inside his heart.

“Jaejoong? Junsu wants to talk to you. Follow me.”

The broken angel did as he was told, trying to make out the path of clouds through the blurriness his tears caused.

“Jaejoong,” Junsu whispered before hugged the younger angel. Without realizing it, Jaejoong started humming his favorite tune again, as a faint sound of harps playing echoed through Heaven.

“Do you hear that, Jaejoong? Yunho is praying.”

The angel recognized the tune. The tune that was played every time Yunho prayed.. was the tune he’d been humming for as long as he could remember. It was a tune he’d fallen in love with.

“Y-Yunho?” Jaejoong wiped his tears away, and listened intently to the harps playing.

Junsu smiled. “Jaejoong, you fell in love with Yunho before you even realized it. You fell in love with his tune. I never told you specifically what to do on Earth, because by just being there for Yunho, the two of you would eventually realize your feelings. That’s why I sent you to help him.”

“Only to take him away from me?”

“No. That was never my intention, but I needed to make sure you truly loved him. He loves you, you know. Do you love him?”

“Yes.”

Junsu told the other angels to gather around them. “Heaven is no longer where you belong, Jaejoong. You belong with the person you truly love. You told me that one must know love, before one can teach it, and that’s true.”

“W-What? But.. I can’t go back. I’m an angel.”

“Yes, but you will never be happy here. The only reason Heaven took you back… was to say goodbye. You were never Heaven’s angel. You were always Yunho’s angel.”

Jaejoong touched his wings, and right at that point, something fell from his feathers. It was the magnet he’d taken from Yunho’s refrigerator.

“Your first heartache is like a broken mirror. Someday, someone will come along, pick up the pieces and put them together, but you can still see the cracks,” Junsu whispered as he read the lines. “Yunho doesn’t think about her anymore. It’s not her he sees when he kisses you. It’s you, and maybe… it was always meant to be you.”

“You.. you planned this?”

Yoochun smiled as Junsu nodded. “Yes. You were always too reckless for Heaven.”

“Yah!”

With tears in his eyes, Yoochun hugged his favorite angel and wished him good luck, and told him, “I’ll be waiting for you. The next time you come to Heaven, it’ll be with Yunho. And I’ll be watching! If he doesn’t treat you right, I’ll monsoon his ass.”

“Yoochun! Dear God, what has Heaven become?”

Since everybody ignored Junsu, he saw it fit to pay a little visit to earth, or specifically, a human being named Jung Yunho.

~~~~~~~
Two days had passed since Yunho woke up alone, without Jaejoong by his side. He couldn’t understand how he could become so attached to someone he’d only known for a few weeks, but for some reason, he felt like he’d known him forever.
He called in sick, again, and trudged into the bathroom at 6pm with messed up hair and bags under his eyes. As he stared into his reflection, a bright light appeared behind him.
“What the..?“
“Yunho?”
“Mother of God!” Yunho yelled before he ran out of the bathroom, terrified and confused. He dove underneath the comforters sprawled out on his bed and closed his eyes. “Not real, not real.”
“I am real, Yunho, and I need to talk to you.”
“Not real, not real.”
“Jaejoong misses you.”
Yunho opened his eyes and threw the comforters off of the bed, only to be blinded by the bright light in front of him. “W-What? What are you and how do you know about him?”
“Jaejoong didn’t lie when he said he was an angel. He really is and he ascended to Heaven last night.”
“W-What..? I don’t understand.”
Junsu’s light flickered a little. And so, he told the terrified human about the task he’d given Jaejoong. He told him that every time he prayed, Jaejoong would hum along to his tune. Maybe that’s why it felt like they’d known each forever.
“I sent him to you, so that he could teach you to love again. Love is precious, and that girl, was never meant for you. You can’t let someone who isn’t faithful define who you are and what you will become. If you lose love, you lose yourself, and I can’t let that happen. Jaejoong is your angel, and Heaven will be like a prison for him if he doesn’t come back to earth.”
Yunho rubbed his eyes and sighed. “Am I insane if I tell you I believe you? I mean.. despite his attitude, there was always something.. innocent about him that I could never quite pin-point.”
“I’m telling you the truth. Yunho.. did you know that every human has an angel? And when that person’s sadness and despair becomes too much for them to handle, their angel cries for them, because they themselves might not be able to. That, is what rain is. Look outside, Yunho. Heaven is crying for you. Jaejoong is crying for you. Every single time you’ve felt alone and sad, Jaejoong has cried for you. I’ve been watching the both of you.. and I realized you were made for each other. It’s like you were chiseled from the same star.”
“I-I.. don’t even know what to say.. can I trust Jaejoong?”
“Yes, yes, you can. He never left you, Heaven just borrowed him.”
Yunho smiled, and the second he did, the rain stopped.
“That’s my cue to leave. Sleep tonight, Yunho, and when you wake up, Jaejoong will be here. Take good care of him.”
“I will… thank you.”
And so, Yunho feel asleep, not noticing that it suddenly started snowing.
Jaejoong sacrificed his cloud for him.
