There are a lot of reviews about Haruki Murakami’s works out there, but I think it’s okay for me to write my own thoughts about him. For you who is not familiar about Murakami, he is a Japanese novelist, essayist, and also translator for a few English novels into Japanese. He has written many great novels such as Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore ( Read more... )

wow! hello there~ (we probably have never really talked before so im sorry for suddenly commenting) mirai here. :) ive always wanted to try reading his books so I've given Dance Dance Dance & Men Without Women a try. I haven't finished the latter but i totally agree with what you said! I recently mentioned about the books to my best friend and she asked me if Murakami was really great as what the people give him credits for, and i was like you. i told her it wasnt really about the story per se, but it's just the way he writes! it hits straight home! :) i'll try reading more of his works and will consider the list you gave~

hello,
thank you for your comment. Dance dance dance is one of my favorite, I read it twice already;)
man without women is interesting, please go on on reading it (^^)v
I think most of his readers love the way he writes, the words are not difficult, but they are beautiful (i'm totally biased when it's about murakami).
I highly recommend Norwegian Wood, it's such a masterpiece ʕ•ٹ•ʔ

Hello! Yes I wanted to read his works for a while since they were really popular and appeared in many bookshops as I passed by. I finally read 'Hard boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' (got tricked by the title since I really enjoy detective fiction) and 'Dance Dance Dance' and have bought others to read.

I really enjoy his writing style and how everything floats between reality and fantasy. It also made me realise that books don't need to have a solid ending to be satisfying, it is good to have questions to ponder about afterwards. It is also refreshing to read authors that are not from the Western mindset to get different perspectives and ideas that are meaningful to them.

I totally agree with you that good novels don't need to give answers for everything. I read novels from western writers too and most of them tend to provide happy ending. Well, perhaps it's unfair to compare Murakami with writer like Jodi Picoult or Nicholas Spark because they have different writing style.

Wow, you read Hard Boiled Wonderland first? That's unexpected. Tbh, I don't understand the whole picture of that novel, but I still love it. My husband loves it very much that he reads it over and over again.

I really encourage you to read all of his works ^_^
it's so nice to talk about what will happen to the character as the story ended with cliffhanger :)
I'm available if you want to discuss it (I always enjoy talking with Murakami's readers)
